Daniel James Alabaster was born in Wellington, New Zealand on 10 June 1892. A Clerk by occupation, he attested for the N.Z.E.F. on 23 August 1915. Serving with the N.Z.F.A. he embarked for France in April 1916. On 18 April 1918 he was wounded in action - suffering gun shot wounds to the feet. Awarded the M.S.M. for his war services. He was discharged from the Army on 7 March 1919 being ‘no longer fit for war service on account of wounds received in action’. Daniel Alabaster died in Wellington on 4 August 1963. With original N.Z.E.F. Certificate of Discharge and copied service papers and gazette extracts; also with riband bar.

Appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Fusiliers on 17 October 1914 and advanced to Temporary Lieutenant in June 1915. Appointed a Flying Officer (Observer) in the R.F.C. in December 1916 and Adjutant and Temporary Captain in November 1917. On 1 April 1918 he was ranked as a Captain in the R.A.F.; promoted to Flight Lieutenant in March 1938 and Squadron Leader in December 1941.
