A QUANTITY OF ORIGINAL 1939-45 WAR DOCUMENTATION OF R.A.F. AND R.C.A.F. INTEREST, comprising Royal Canadian Air Force Sight Log Books (2), with named front covers to ‘R. Hall’ and ‘W. G. Conley’, the former with entries the period August- September 1944, and the latter for the period September-October 1944, and both with flights in Ansons; together with Royal Air Force Service and Release Books (3), appertaining to Flying Officer P. A. Litchfield, L.A.C. J. Tapner and L.A. C. A. H. Sturmer, this last with a quantity of wartime letters; three Royal Air Force exercise books with technical notes and drawings, the whole appertaining to L.A.C. Howell; three 1939-45 War identity discs, one to ‘Can. R133957 Airman H. J. Cretney, R.C.A.F.’, and the others to ‘1136696 Peirce, R.A.F.’, and an interesting selection of wartime photographs of aircrew, etc., overall in good condition (Lot)

AN ORIGINAL R.A.F. PILOT’S FLYING LOG BOOK APPERTAINING TO Captain J. G. East, D.F.C., Royal Artillery (A.O.P.), who completed in excess of 320 operational sorties in Austers of No. 651 Squadron in Italy 1944-45, comprising standard Form 414- type book, the front cover inscribed, ‘Capt. J. G. East, D.F.C., R.A. (A.O.P.)’ and with ‘II’ to denote his second flying log book, though with a tally of operational hours and sorties from this previous book on opening pages, and covering the period May 1944 until October 1953, the mass of wartime photographic, reconnaissance and artillery spotting entries particularly detailed, and the latter entries for services in No. 661 Squadron (A.O.P.), Royal Auxiliary Air Force; together with the recipient’s copies of Horses and Soldiers, by Gilbert Holiday (Privately published, Aldershot, circa 1940), with a dozen or so autographs of members of the 1st Mountain Regiment, R.A., dated at Colchester on 3 March 1941, and With The Allied Armies in Italy, by Edward Seago (Collins, London, 1945), generally in good condition (Lot) £150-200

Letter reads, ‘My Dear General, Thank you for your letter of yesterday. I expect the King would like to see you, if possible, before you proceed to India on January 2nd to inspect the Artillery, and we will try and fix up a time. His Majesty will, I am sure, be pleased to accept a copy of your book “Martial Races of India” and when this reaches me I shall have much pleasure in submitting it to the King. George Fletcher MacMunn was born on 14 August 1869 and was educated at Kensington School. He entered the Royal Artillery in 1888. Served in Upper Burma in the Irrawwady Column, 1892, was wounded and mentioned in despatches and awarded the D.S.O. for the Defence of Sadon. Then served in the Sima Column, 1893; Kohat Field Force, 1897, and Tirah Expedition, 1897-98. He then served in South Africa with the Artillery and Staff, was wounded and twice mentioned in despatches and received the brevet of Major. Served in the Great War in Gallipoli and Mesopotamia, being twelve times mentioned in despatches, received the brevet of Colonel and was awarded the C.B., K.C.B., C.S.I., K.C.S.I. Was appointed C-in-C. Mesopotamia, 1919-20 and Quartermaster General, India, 1920-24. A prolific author, he died on 23 August 1952. With copied research on the recipient.
