William Arthur Standing was born in Brixton, London on 6 April 1884. A Labourer by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 12 March 1900, being advanced to Boy 1st Class in January 1901. He served on H.M.S. Redbreast, October 1901- August 1903, being promoted to Signalman in April 1902. Promoted to Leading Signalman when on Good Hope in February 1912. For most of the Great War he served on H.M.S. Mastiff. Awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in October 1917. Pensioned ashore with the reduction of the Navy in October 1922. With copied service papers.
