Wednesday in Townstal

Three months ago a group of volunteers agreed to establish a food bank in Dartmouth. For the uninitiated, a food bank is a place where people in need can go and obtain a bag of basic foodstuffs. Since Dartmouth’s food bank opened, another food bank has been opened in Brixham and a food bank is planned for Kingsbridge. Volunteers from Dartmouth have been advising the Kingsbridge project. The Food Bank has been given space at the Townstal Community Hall, and joins a number of other community groups who oper- ate there on Wednesdays. During the morning a Job Club operates, alongside volunteers for the Citizens Advice Bureau for who have a drop-in service.

From noon until 2.00pm the Food Bank is open for business, together with a new Credit Union. Through the Food Bank contact can also be made with a voluntary group offering free advice and as- sistance to those with serious debt problems.

The Food Bank has been given practical help and encouragement from a large number of local organisations and individuals, among them, Town Councillor. David Gent, who chairs the management committee.

Anyone who needs help – or knows someone who needs help

– is urged to come to the Community Hall on Wednesday. The Food Bank’s services are free, confidential, and no means testing is involved.

Youth Council

The Town Council takes seriously its involve- ment with the young people of Dartmouth. It has built a successful relationship with the Academy which has even seen the Council holding one of its monthly meetings in the Sixth Form Centre at Dartmouth Academy. Now the Town Council is beginning to establish

a new Youth Forum so that the voices of the youth of the town can be heard. There have been two exploratory meetings in the Guildhall and the third is scheduled to take place at the Academy. Our newly elected Town Councillor, Councillor Hayley Rundle, has agreed to be the Council’s Youth Ambassador. The intention is to have the Forum meeting on a regular basis by the Autumn.

Thomas Newcomen - a man of faith

Blue skies, fluffy white clouds, and the warm sun glinting on the river. A fantastic atmosphere with music everywhere and crowds of smil- ing people strolling around this beautiful town, enjoying it all. Nine months of planning plus several weeks of hard labour for the dedi- cated volunteers of the committee resulted in one of the best Festivals yet – or so people are telling the committee. Dartmouth Town Council is proud to have been a supporter of the Music Festival for many years, providing facilities and support – including The Guildhall and The Market. We are looking forward to 2013.

Jubilee procession triumph in Dartmouth 73 !

This year is the tercentenary of the manufacture of the first Newcomen engine – the world’s first practical steam engine and the workhorse of the early decades of the industrial revolution. Thomas Newcomen was Dartmouth born and bred. He was an ironmonger and an inventor. What is less known about him that he was also a Baptist minister, and often preached at the Chapel here in Dartmouth. A plaque commemorating this part of his life was at one time displayed in the old chapel in Chapel Lane, but is now believed to be lost. Newcomen died in London and is buried in Bunhill Fields, a burial ground reserved for “dissenters”. Dartmouth Town Council have been involved from the start with the project. The celebrations of the engine begin in Dartmouth on 9th July, and to celebrate the man himself and his faith there will be a special memorial service at St Saviour’s during the afternoon of Wednesday 11th July. The service will jointly be taken by Father Will and by Rev Bruce Porter, the Minister at Dartmouth Baptist Church. It will include a short extract from the Dart- mouth Players production From Floods Defend on the life of Thomas Newcomen. All are welcome.
