Summer time at Mayne Gallery with established artists John Donaldson & Howard Birchmore
‘Cote de Provence’ Original Oil on Board by John Donaldson
“Whether what inspires me about a scene is immediately given to the viewer as a result of days or weeks in the studio - or appears more slowly due to free and rapid brushwork - the method doesn’t matter. The subject is everything.”
Howard Birchmore Howard began drawing at age three, started painting with oils at the age of twelve and completed his first official commission when only fifteen. He is now an established professional artist. He has had several one-man exhibitions and has had work published on greetings cards and calendars. Among his clients have been the London City Airport, The Henley Standard, Reading Borough Council, Wycombe District Council and many local businesses. His work is a stunning combination of light and the movement of water. He is now exhibiting local views at the Gallery with great success.
“Landscape has played an integral part in my visual world. Brought up in London has lead me to appreciate contrasts on a magnificent scale.”
Sailing Off Salcombe’ Original Acrylic on Canvas by Howard Birchmore
John Donaldson John is an accomplished artist and musician. His creativity is evident from his artwork; beautiful compositions of landscapes painted in vibrant, expressive colours. Being surrounded by the countryside has allowed him to draw inspiration from where he lives. He now splits his time between the West Country and France and cites Provence, the Cote d’Azur, Liguria, Umbria and Tuscany as some of his favourite places to paint. When asked to describe his work, John recognises that his paintings are not easily labelled but feels his work is best described under the heading of ‘impressionist’ in that there is no hidden meaning behind his work; he simply wants to communicate the beauty of a fleeting moment by being honest about what he sees and hoping someone else will identify with his interpretation of that moment, which is parallel to what early impressionist painters were trying to achieve.
