DARTMOUTH GUARDIAN

! Newsletter of Dartmouth Town Council Issue 18 - July 2012 The Tour of Britain

The The Tour of Britain, this country’s major professional cycle race takes place every September, and this year the penultimate stage of the race will conclude in Dartmouth on Saturday 15th September.

This stage begins in Barnstaple and the riders will pass through Bideford, Great Torrington, Hatherleigh, Okehampton, Lydford, Tavistock, Ashburton, Buck- fastleigh, and Kingsbridge before fin- ishing in Dartmouth – a gruelling 170 kilometres with hardly any flat road the whole way. The competitors will come down College Way, turning onto the South Embankment for a sprint finish to the finish-line by the Boat float. The finish time is expected to be 2.30pm. To celebrate the Tour’s first visit to Dartmouth, a working group with repre- sentatives from various local organisations and the Town Council is organising a weekend of special events. They will include music on the Bandstand on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, cycling demonstrations, and a fete. A highlight will be a performance by the country’s leading mountain bike trials athlete, Andrei Burton. Burton, who has won many awards, puts on a spectacular display which combines mountain-bik- ing, acrobatics and supreme athleticism. Sponsored by Devon County Council, the event will be free of charge. This will be part of an amazing sum- mer in Dartmouth, which has already included the Music Festival, the visit of the Olympic torch, the Diamond Jubilee and the Newcomen celebra- tions, with Regatta still to come. Large numbers of visitors are expected on that Saturday, and a fantastic atmo- sphere is almost guaranteed.

Millwood Homes-The West Dartmouth Development

The questionnaire was issued in the middle of April, which was a bit later than planned. To date we have received in excess of 500 forms, which clearly reflects the town’s peoples’ interest in this sensitive subject. These will now be analysed, verified by several independent people, to confirm its validity, and the results will be published at the earliest opportunity. We hope to be able to report some if not all the findings in the next edition.

For the past four months, working on behalf of South Hams District Council, the Devon based house builder Millwood Homes has been preparing its detailed plans for a large development which will include among other things more than 400 homes. This will go to some way towards plugging the housing gap determined by the District Councils planners. In addition to the houses, the development has earmarked a large amount of land to be used for EMPLOYMENT purposes, and a major local company has already indicated interest in basing its operations there. There are still some technical planning issues to resolve and the developer is currently in discussion with SHDC. All being well, Millwood should be in a position to apply for planning permissions in Spring 2013. The first phase of building which will include infrastructure matters such as electricity supply, access roads and sewage disposal will begin in 2014. Millwood Homes has consulted widely with the local commu- nity through a series of exhibitions. In addition a working group involving Dartmouth Town Council SHDC, DCC, community groups and the Academy have all had a number of lengthy meet- ings with the developer. Dartmouth Town Council’s representatives will continue to be involved throughout the planning process to ensure that the best outcome for the town in achieved.

As we go to press Dartmouth Town Council is arranging for Millwood Homes to attend a Council meeting to give an up- date. This will be reported in the next issue.
