The community magazine for Dartmouth and local villages

The Best Read local publication by far Dear Reader I

write this page about a week or so before By The Dart hits the streets. Today it’s chucking it down when, by rights, the sun should be shining. Some hope… Anyhow, I’m an eternal optimist and summer will have arrived by much the same time as this issue reaches you. Hopefully, therefore, you’ll find much in this issue to tempt you outdoors to enjoy the many delights and riches of Dartmouth and the surrounding area. We’ve gone out of our way to provide some ideas and suggestions.

Apart from 20 Things to Do In July (see page 64), the main focus this month will be on the London Olympics. In keeping with this theme, we’ve interviewed some Local Olympians (past, present and hopefully future) – see page 89. As shops reopen after Dartmouth’s dreadful fire of 2010, our feature, Phoenix from The Fire, tells their stories (page 36). With the BRNC so much part of local life, we describe the importance of the Passing Out Parades (page 94). The History of The Railway (page 58) comes under the spotlight plus all that might be seen Diving under Start Bay (page 68).

We’ve almost completed our series of How Dartmouth Works – this month

it’s how we recycle our rubbish (page 84). What’s in a Name – Blackawton gets the treatment this time (page 142). Need more? – then features on the Old Dartmothians, interviews with Jim Maker, Linda & Ron Lampden, Daiel Tag and Andrew Pooley should do it...plus lots more.

Finally our thanks to the 150 or so advertisers this issue that have made it one of the biggest since we started.

Best wishes, Mark Simpson, Publisher Next Issue - out August 10th
