Women, especially in the Bible belt states, where their health and reproductive rights are restricted, are not speaking out against these draconian laws.

Many politicians are not taking a stand against what is going on. It never before oc- curred to me that this was a problem until many state lawmakers began their cru- sade against women’s health rights, and Rush Limbaugh was so nasty in calling a young woman a slut who was only defending what most women feel is their due. It’s sad, to say the least. It is even sadder when our Congress holds hearings on these subjects, and women are not even asked to testify.

Rick Santorum, no longer in the running as a candidate for the presidency, is even out of touch with his church. He denies global warning, which his Catholic Church does not, and does not believe in evolution, which his Church does. Both agree on denying contraceptives and abortion even in cases of rape and incest. Many Catho- lic women ignore the Church’s policies on both. Could be his positions are why he was popular with evangelists.

I have not heard of any rumblings here in Vermont from men wanting to deny women their rights and doubt that I will, but neighboring New Hampshire, which re- cently voted in favor of same sex marriage, had some legislators talking about re- pealing this law, but the bill to repeal failed to pass. Who knows what’s next? Ver- mont was the first state in the union to recognize the rights of same sex couples, and the first to legislate same sex marriage. (New Hampshire leans right; Vermont leans left.)
