It has been written that women boomers and earlier were encouraged by their mothers to “stay at home” and become housewives and moms. One commentator in her late sixties even said, “We were encouraged,” etc., as if every young woman in her day went through basic training on these choices. (If they wanted a job, most, I am told, had two choices – teachers or nurses.) If this went on in our home when I was a youngster, I didn’t notice it. I have in the past worked with women who came from the same generation as I did, or an earlier one, who had both a family life and/ or a business career. So there were exceptions. My mother taught my brother, my sister and me how to cook, as I did our son and daughter. (Our son today is the bet- ter cook.) I even asked mum to teach me how to knit. I turned out a number of scarves!

Today, there are women who are housewives of choice, staying home to rear their

children, and, for religious reasons, subservient to their husbands who do not want them to have a job. (See references to the Apostle Paul in Bible chapters Timothy and Titus). There also are a growing number of women who have both careers and are married, some with children. My former employer, Du Pont, now has a woman chief executive officer. And there was plenty of attention given to the woman heading IBM; especially because her company is a sponsor of the Masters Golf Tournament held at a Georgia Golf complex that has only men on its board.
