Argan Oil Ancient Tradition to Hottest Trend
Argan oil is one of the rarest oils on Earth and is said to have restorative and age-defying effects. It is produced from the kernels of the argan tree, which is unique to Morocco and is endangered.
Originally the indigenous people of Morocco,
the Berbers, and more
specifically Berber women, collected the undigested pits from the waste of goats which climb the trees to eat their fruit. Each pit contains one to three kernels. The oil, used for cosmetics and cooking, was made by first roasting and then grinding and pressing the kernels. However in the early 90’s, the European cosmetic and culinary industries discovered the benefits of argan oil, saw a business opportunity and began to mechanize production in order to increase volume.
This region had already been
recognized as a Biosphere Reserve, and with the encouragement of Moroccan authorities, Berber woman began to set up cooperatives with the intention to produce and sell argan oil. Most took the traditional route and opted to produce the oil by hand (minus the goats). This oil is of superior quality and is more expensive. The slower traditional methods
of production
generally require 20 to 30 hours of work to produce one liter of oil.
Currently the most common use of argan oil is to condition and repair the hair.
It’s rich in vitamin E, phenols,
carotenes, squalene and unsaturated fatty acids. There is some indication that argan oil may be an effective treatment for
psoriasis, and that it reduces the production of sebum.
Newer uses for argan oil include softening dry skin and rough patches, minimizing the appearance of fine lines, and conditioning cuticles. In pregnancy it can be used to help prevent stretch marks and it is widely reported to heal and reduce scarring. It is safe to use on a baby’s delicate skin to help treat dryness and soothe redness. It is also quickly gaining popularity as a massage oil.
Pure organic argan oil contains no
harmful or irritating chemicals and has innumerable uses and benefits which is the reason it is quickly becoming known as a miracle oil, widely used in the cosmetic industry.
