OSHA and Your Mother-in-Law J
udging by the title of this article you might wonder what the two have in common. Well, maybe I just wanted
to grab your attention. Imagine that Mom moved in on a "temporary" basis. Being temporary, you might think she would move out in a week or two—maybe even a month. If Mom starts having all her mail forwarded to your address, you might wonder how long she was planning to stay under this "temporary" agreement. Well, if your mother-in-law's name is spelled O-S-H-A she has been with you for more than 15 years now.
Yes, back in 1995 OSHA made a decision that was supposed to be "temporary." Unfortunately, their alternative measures for fall protection have grown into
the standard operating procedure for most trades on a residential jobsite. In December of 2010, OSHA finally rescinded these rules. Effective June 16, 2011 the fall protection standards found in Subpart M of 29 CFR 1926 will be enforced by OSHA on all construction jobsites—commercial and residential.
In order to become familiar with this standard the Codes and Standards Committee of the GHBA invites you to its next meeting from noon to 1 p.m. on April 14, 2011 at the GHBA building. A representative from OSHA will be present to give us an update and tell us what this standard means for home builders and their trades. A question and answer period will follow. In addition, we will finalize
plans for a 10-hour OSHA approved safety class to be offered at the GHBA in early May. The class will cover many subjects from fall protection, electrical hazards, personal safety equipment and much more. Participants will receive an OSHA 10-hour card.
I can never guess what Mom is going to do next. Likewise, we cannot predict how OSHA is going to enforce these provisions. This meeting should answer many questions. Be an informed professional. Put this very important meeting on your calendar today. RSVP to Maggie Yancy at (281) 970-8970 x142 or myancey@ghba. org. We'll see you there!
