David Weekley Homes Honored by U.S. Dept. of Energy

David Weekley Homes was honored for a second time by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as the Energy Efficiency Leader for Volume Builders at the Annual BASF Builder’s Challenge Awards. Weekley ranks in the top 1.5% in energy efficiency for all homes being built in the U.S.

The DOE posed a challenge to the homebuilding industry—to build a new generation of high-performance homes. To qualify for the challenge, a home must score 70 or less on the Home Energy Rating System (HERS). Each 1-point decrease in the index corresponds to a 1% reduction in energy consumption. Weekley qualified 779 homes with average HERS scores from 59 to 68. Weekley’s Houston division has qualified more than 1,100 homes since December 2008—more than any other builder. David Weekley homes in Houston are designed to use 18% less energy than ENERGY STAR homes (85 HERS) and at least 60% less energy than typical existing homes (130 HERS). Building Science Corporation recently calculated that David Weekley homeowners save an average of $1,200 annually on their utility bills. www.davidweekleyhomes.com.
