A – Z OF USEFUL INFORMATION

The following information is aimed at providing a general guide, which we hope will make settling in to this Garrison a little easier. More detailed information on many of these subjects can be found within the Paderborn, Sennelager & Detmold Service Community Guide or by contacting the HIVE team.

ACCOMMODATION

If you have family visiting from UK and need details of accommodation, call in to the HIVE for a comprehensive list of local B&B and Hotels. Local Tourist Offices can also help with bookings: tourist-info@paderborn.de & www.stadtdetmold.de

BFG THE CAR

BFG Office: 05254 982 2638 Mil: 79 2638 JHQ Office: 02161 472 2229 Mil: 72 2229 You are required under British Army (Germany) Standing order 3213 to register your vehicle with the BFG Vehicle Licensing Office. The unit BFG Office can advise you on the correct procedure to be followed. All members of BFG must register their vehicles with the BFG VLO within 30 days of arrival. Before registration all drivers must take a matrix test and be issued with a BFG Driving Permit.

BANKING

Setting up an account is a fairly straight forward operation, much the same as at home. All you need is your passport and money for the initial deposit. If you open the account with cash your account is opened immediately. If you are transferring funds from your home bank, it can take up to a couple of weeks. Once you open the account the bank will issue you a Eurocard (EC). Please note Germany is largely a cash based consumer society e.g. not all restaurants and shops will accept Credit/Debit cards – ask before you purchase goods. If you DO use a UK credit/debit card you may incur bank charges on top of the purchase price.

BIKING IN GERMANY

Riding your bike in Germany requires you to have a road worthy bike with lights, reflectors, brakes and a bell to alert pedestrians that you are coming. If you want to get your bike checked out, speak to your local RMP’s on 05254 982 2223
