Hermès, the luxury fashion group, has hired banks BNP Paribas and Bank of America Merrill Lynch as advisers following moves by rival luxury goods group LVMH to grow its shareholding in the business. LVMH bought a 17.1% stake in Hermès (pictured) in October. LVMH has said it had no intention of taking control of Hermès.


Escada, the German mainstream womenswear brand, has launched a design contest with the Design Museum in London for fashion students in the UK and Republic of Ireland, offering an internship at Escada’s Munich design department. Visit www.designmuseum.org/ universities/competitions for details.


Lee Jeans, the denim brand, has appointed Gary Lee, former UK managing director of eyewear brand Oakley, as UK country manager. Lee also launched US bag specialist Eastpak in the UK. He replaces Dave Morton, who emigrated to Australia six months ago.


Work In Progress, the business that owns the European distribution rights to US streetwear brand Carhartt, has appointed Simon Walker as managing director of its UK operations. Walker was formerly country manager for Swedish sports brand Peak Performance and held key senior positions within the J Lindeberg and Timberland brands.


Debenhams, the department store chain, has hired ecommerce fashion photography provider Fashshot to manage its photography and catwalk videos as it ramps up its transactional web operations.

Wade-Smith plans store for own label


BY SUZANNE BEARNE Liverpool entrepreneur Robert Wade-Smith is to open a fl agship store in the city for his latest premium venture which comprises ranges designed by and named after members of his family. Wade-Smith, who famously oper-


ated his now-defunct eponymous fi ve-store designer mini-chain in the 1990s before selling it to Arcadia for £17m in 1998 and then buying it back three years later for £7m, has again used his name to showcase his latest business venture. Wade-Smith established the most


recent incarnation, Wade-Smith Studios, in September with wife Angie, son George and daughter Helen. The business, which only trades a few days a week from a 1,200 sq ft store in Hope Street, sells separate collections aimed at each family members’ respective age groups and genders priced from £50

an “on-tour pop-up shop” next year, which will move around the UK to help raise awareness of the brand. Earlier this year, Wade-Smith axed


plans to launch an independent store concept, which had been planned to work with brands on a concession model, after the business model failed to attract enough interest. Wade-Smith said: “We only had six


brands signed up and really needed another 15 or so to launch it.”


McCarthy is a doctor in the House


House of Fraser chairman Don McCarthy received an honorary degree from Glasgow Caledonian University last week for services to the retail industry. In 2008, House of Fraser – which was founded in the city in 1849 – started a three-year sponsorship of the university’s MBA in luxury brand marketing. McCarthy, who received the degree of Doctor of the University for Services to the Retail Industry, began his career in the footwear industry in the 1970s.
