SPRING 11 COLLECTIONS High street preview The 1950s, 1960s and 1970s are all plundered for retailers’ spring 11 inspiration, as catwalk trends trickle down KAREN MILLEN
The look An explosion of colour underpins a sexy, fresh and accomplished spring 11 collection by Karen Millen. The womenswear retailer, like many of its high street counterparts, focused on a trend-led, neutral palette for autumn 10, so it’s refreshing to see brights back on its agenda. The jewel tones seen on Gucci’s
catwalks are referenced, with jade and navy worked into bold stripes on Riviera-inspired shirt dresses and a rich fuchsia pink employed on angular satin pleats that decorate a standout body-con evening dress. A sports utility theme comes through on silk bombers that are trimmed with zips, while wide-leg denims teamed with crisp white shirts convey a 1970s direction.
Key pieces l Black lace shorts with scalloped hem l Fuchsia and black striped skater skirt with yellow vest l Pleated body-con evening dress with tribal-inspired breast plates l Riviera-style dress in pink and black stripes
Right for the market? Karen Millen continues to move away from its reputation as a dress-led retailer with a collection of accomplished separates. Although not known for slavishly following trends, for spring 11 the retailer has ticked the 1970s, sports utility and jewel tones trend boxes, but they are interpreted with a twist and geared towards a sophisticated woman.
COAST
The look Texture, 1950s silhouettes and tonal colours are the resounding themes at occasionwear retailer Coast for spring 11. One-shoulder and strapless
dresses – often in maxi lengths – with knife pleats and tiered ruffles are interspersed with strong separates, as silk and chiffon sleeveless tops sit with tailored trousers and city shorts. A cropped, tailored blazer and
crisp white shirt are part of Coast’s heritage range as it celebrates its 15th birthday with 15 reinterpreted pieces from its archive. The palette ranges from white, cream and taupe to bright purple, turquoise and pink. Spots and stripes feature and floral prints are stylised. Texture generally replaces pattern with scallop edges, layered chiffon and lace appliqué.
Key pieces l White strapless lace dress (£135) l Black satin and lace top (£50) l Layered chiffon-front cardigan (£75) l Strapless striped dress with notch detail (£195)
Right for the market? Coast services a 25-year-old trend- aware customer through to the stylish 50-plus mother-of-the-bride with this collection, which stays on the right side of classics with a fashion twist. Lace is worked into an appliqué strapless dress but also into an intricate tailored coat to cater for the more mature woman. Coast’s bread-and-butter category – the dress – stands out this season and customers will be spoilt for choice.
