SPRING 11 COLLECTIONS
The 1950s trend plays fi rmly into Oasis’s hands – girly dresses with nipped-in waists is what the womenswear chain does best
« OASIS
The look Oasis embraces the ubiquitous 1970s trend with a boho look and a Farrah Fawcett story – the latter dominated by high-waisted trousers, slinky jerseys and maxi and midi dresses in a neutral palette of terracottas and tobaccos. Sunburst pleats are used widely,
both tiered on jersey camisoles and adding texture to an asymmetric wraparound dress. High-waisted jersey trousers feature as does a white, Céline-inspired trouser suit. Oasis also latches on to the 1950s
trend, with a range of flirty, Doris Day-inspired dresses. A story called China Blues will
hit stores in March and is characterised by a blue and white palette and heavy use of appliqué to give a 3D texture.
Key pieces ● White, Céline-inspired suit ● High-waisted jersey trousers ● Pleated asymmetric dress in putty ● Strapless olive jumpsuit ● Doris Day dresses in Riviera stripes
Right for the market? A 1950s trend plays firmly into Oasis’s hands – girly dresses with nipped-in waists is what the womenswear chain does best – while the inclusion of bright separates gives it a modern feel that stops the offer becoming too predictable. It has done a thorough job on the
1970s trend and has some strong commercial pieces, but too many of them also have that synthetic 1970s could-go-up-in-flames-at-any- moment feel.
WAREHOUSE
The look Warehouse channels the 1970s trend for spring 11, with a romantic and a simple trend also key stories, as seen via sheer bright maxi dresses, white broderie anglaise and lace dresses and pink and orange ditsy prints. Wide-leg trousers, sheer blouses and loose-fit shorts are simple but well executed. Drapes and pleats add interest. Colours stay neutral in white, cream and pale grey. Navy, green and white-striped
jersey tops and knits sit with high- waisted jeans and A-line button-up denim skirts in a 1970s casualwear story. Black is only used in a rock ’n’ roll look which includes rivet detail necklines and fringing on T-shirts and vests. A higher-priced collection called Luxe has been introduced for spring
11 and features separates and tailoring including a silk and wool-mix blazer and coral silk shirt.
Key pieces ● Safari khaki dress ● Navy striped three quarter-sleeved dress ● Grey rivet leather biker jacket ● Cream broderie anglaise dress
Right for the market? Silhouettes or design aspects such as overlays on dresses are used across different stories, making for a cohesive, well-built collection. Warehouse has raised the quality and attention to detail on cut, which, along with the introduction of Luxe, could pitch the retailer against the likes of Reiss and French Connection.
