50/ THE RIDER JULY 2010

WHAT’S UP DOC From the desks of Dr’s Armstrong & Frost.

Question:

Dear Doctors could you please help me with a problem I am having with my pony. Yesterday morning I was getting ready for a show and when I took my pony out of his stall he was covered for nose to mid abdomen with hives. His eyes were swollen shut and he looked so miserable. I called our local vet to come out and he gave him a number of injections, which made his feel and look allot better. But now I am worried that this will happen again and if he does indeed have allergies???

HALTON EQUINE VETERINARY SERVICES ANSWER

Dear CJ the answer to your question is yes your pony could possibly have allergies.

Horses are subject to a multitude of allergic type reactions. In fact, when it comes to respiratory tract allergic problems they respond very much like people and play an important part in the study of aller- gic respiratory problems in people.

Allergic response in horses include: - Hives (swollen patches in the skin)

- Eosinophilic granulomas – allergic bumps in the skin that become little pustules

- Various degrees of swelling of the lips, nostrils and /or head - Nasal discharge – minimal or often copious amounts - Inflamed eyes or discharge from the eyes - Coughing - Sneezing

- Generalized poor performance

These allergic responses are most frequently set off by stimuli in the horses immediate environment. Therefore, the diagnostic task is to first identify the type of allergic response of concern then the organs or part of the body concerned and finally, if possible, the causative agent. The cure then becomes simple – remove the allergic stimulus from the horse’s environment and treat the immediate symptoms. Unfortu- nately, it is not always that easy. Identifying the allergic stimulus can at times be impossible and then if identified removing it from the environ- ment can be difficult to impossible. In these cases we move to more supportive treatment regimes that have to be continuous throughout the exposure period.

If your pony exhibits any one or more of the above mentioned signs then I recommend that you ask your veterinarian to examine the pony determine if allergies are a potential problem and then work towards elimination of the cause or management of the condition.

The Prince Philip Cup Games are a team competi- tion played by Pony Clubs around the world. Many of the Games require the riders and ponies to run a slalom course around a series of poles from one end of the playing field to the other, where they hand-off some- thing to the next rider on their team. In some races, riders have to vault off of and onto their ponies.
