Southampton ice rink plans submitted
A new Olympic-sized ice rink is
to be developed in Southampton, under plans submitted to the local authority by developer Warburg Property Development. Southampton City Council will decide whether to approve the scheme, which will transform two unoccupied sites in the heart of the city – including the former Chantry Hall site. In addition to the ice rink, the four-storey, mixed-use development is set to include a dance studio, a 40-station fitness suite, a restaurant/bar and a café, as well as retail outlets and car parking.
£8.8m Tipton pool plans move forward
Plans for a £8.8m swimming pool in Tipton, West Midlands, have moved forward after the local authority backed the use of the former Little Burton site. Sandwell Council agreed to grant an exception to its unitary development plan to build the facility on land earmarked for residential development. Plans include a new 25m swimming pool, a teaching pool, a fitness suite and associated changing and community facilities, as well as a refreshment area.
New-look facilities for Carryduff centre
Castlereagh Borough Council has completed work on the refurbishment of Lough Moss Leisure Centre in Carryduff, County Down. A new floodlit artificial pitch has been created as part of the project, which will accommodate hockey and football and can be divided into four smaller pitches. Internal work included the installation of a Pulastic sports hall surface and upgraded squash courts, while a new 30m (98ft) wind turbine will enhance sustainability.

Work starts on new Salford stadium
£26m Barton-upon-Irwell venue to provide new home for Salford City Reds team

Salford City Reds has an- nounced plans to relocate to its new £26m community stadium near Barton-upon-Irwell by the end of next year, now that work has started on the scheme. A groundbreaking ceremony
has been held to mark the start of work to prepare the site for the 15,000-capacity venue, which will provide a new home for the rugby league club. Salford City Council has
formed a joint venture with developer Peel to build and run the venue, with detailed proposals due to be considered by planning officials in August. The £4m cost of preparing
the 70-acre (28-hectare) site is being met by the Northwest
It is hoped the new stadium will be completed by December 2011
Regional Development Agency (NWDA), while the construction stage will start in October. It is hoped the stadium will
be delivered by December 2011 to boost the club's bid to secure a Super League licence between 2012-15.
NWDA chief executive Steve
Broomhead said: "The new stadium will bring 45 acres (18 hectares) of derelict brownfield land back into productive use for the community and provide a venue for events which will benefit the visitor economy."
Interest rate rise poised to increase MUFC debts

Manchester United Football Club (MUFC) could see its debt increase by a further £75m after it was revealed the Premier League club is set to face a rise in interest rates. According to The Times, the
interest rate on a payment in kind loan taken out by owners, the Glazer family, in 2006 is set to increase to 16.25 per cent after the club breached the loan's financial rules.

Local council backs £4.5m Telford sports funding bid
Telford and Wrekin Council (TWC) has announced that it is backing a bid for £4.5m of Sport England funding to go towards the construction of a new sports complex in the town. AFC Telford United and the Telford College of Arts and Technology are behind the bid to help
fund the development, which will include a 1,200-seat indoor sports hall at the institution and a four-court, five-a-side football centre for the football club – both sites located in Wellington. TWC has approved a grant of £15,000 to help with the preparation of the bid, which is propos- ing a capital programme to develop local and regional sports facilities.
