£4m Todmorden Town Hall plans approved

£4m plans for Todmorden Town Hall in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, have been approved by the borough council's project board. The proposals, drawn up by London-based architects Camillin Denny, include an extensive refurbishment of the exterior and interior of the building and turning the basement into a café and heritage exhibition space. The plans also include shops and meeting rooms, new toilets, a bar and lifts below an extension to the ballroom balcony.

Drama project to boost Anglesey attractions

Tourist attractions on the Isle

of Anglesey, North Wales, are set to benefit from a new drama scheme, which aims to bring history alive for visitors. Members of Menai Bridge-based theatre group Cwmni'r Frân Wen will adopt the role of shipwreck looters and other characters as part of courtroom reenactments at Beaumaris Courthouse. The company will also help to bring Iron Age ancestors back to life at the Llynnon round houses in Llanddeusant as part of the project, commissioned by the Isle of Anglesey County Council.

Royal opening for Scarborough theatre

A new open air theatre in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, has been officially opened by Her Majesty The Queen. The new-look 6,500-seat venue, which has undergone a £3.5m revamp funded by Scarborough Borough Council, was unveiled by Her Majesty as part of a royal visit to North Yorkshire and the Duchy of Lancaster. A surplus from the first phase of the resort's Sands development enabled the council to finance the improvements at the theatre.

Bovis Lend Lease to deliver new £11.5m cultural venue for the Merseyside town

A developer has been appoint- ed for a £15m cultural scheme in Southport, Merseyside. Bovis Lend Lease won an

£11.5m contract to deliver the project, which will see a Grade II-listed arts centre, library and gallery refurbished and joined together to create a theatre, museum and music venue. The project is being funded

by the council, the Northwest Development Agency and the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment. The council's cabinet member

for leisure and tourism, Mike Booth, said: "Although everyone is acutely aware of the current financial difficulties around the world, we are

committed to providing the very best facilities for our residents and visitors and therefore the best opportuni- ties to help support our businesses and communities." Work has already begun on stripping out the existing

buildings, which have become unfit for purpose due to their age and condition. The project is expected to be

completed in three years. A temporary library is currently being fitted out for residents to use while the work is underway.

Green light for £1m Hertford arts facility revamp

An arts venue in Hertford is set to be transformed as part of a £1m redevelopment after plans were given the green light by the local authority. East Herts District Council's

(EHDC) executive has backed the scheme, which will see Castle Hall undergo an extensive refurbishment and rebranded as Hertford Theatre. The project includes a

executive member for commu- nity development said: "Castle Hall has become very tired and outdated and is in desperate need of a complete overhaul to maximise its potential." Work is due to start in early

June, with Castle Hall set to remain closed for the duration of the scheme. The newly- named Hertford Theatre will open at the end of autumn.

Plans for the development of a new £5m cultural venue to replace the Floral Hall in Hornsea have been given the go-ahead. An existing leisure centre will be extended to

provide a new multi-purpose facility under the plans, which were approved by East Riding of Yorkshire Council's (ERYC) planning committee.
