ttglive.com WTM in BAA boss coup

BAA CHIEF executive Colin Matthews is to make a rare appearance at a travel trade event when he speaks at this year’s World Travel Market, in association with TTG. Matthews, who runs seven of the UK’s largest

airports, will join a panel of experts including Birmingham International airport chief executive Paul Kehoe, Christoph Mueller, the new chief executive of Aer Lingus, and Pegasus Airlines chairman Ali Sabanci, on November 10. His appearance will follow a year when BAA

lost £30 million and 2.2 million passengers as a result of the ash cloud and British Airways strikes. It recently lost one of its flagship airports through the sale of Gatwick. Ken O’Toole, Ryanair director of new route de-

velopment, will also join WTM’s aviation pro- gramme when he takes part in a Low Cost Masterclass on November 9. Also featuring TTGnews editor Chris Gray, the

aviation programme has been organised by JLS Consulting. Director John Strickland said: “Some of

In brief

■ Ryanair to axe flights from Belfast City Ryanair is to close its base at Belfast City airport at the end of October with the loss of 50 jobs. The no-frills airline blamed the decision on the continued delay in the airport’s proposed runway extension, which means it will not be built until 2012 at the earliest. Ryanair, which opened the base at Belfast City in October 2007, operates five routes to the UK from the airport. The staff affected have been offered jobs elsewhere.

■ Mexicana ceases operations ‘indefinitely’ Mexicana has stopped flights “indefinitely” after a group of investors failed to agree a cost-cutting deal with unions. The Mexican airline was in bankruptcy protection and had suspended its Gatwick-Mexico City service last month.

the sector’s leading names will share their experi- ences of one of the toughest periods for aviation.” WTM head of marketing and communications

Micaela Juarez said Matthews’ participation was a coup. She added: “As the UK’s largest airport oper- ator, BAA has borne the brunt of the sector’s trou- bles — and BAA rarely speaks at industry events.”

Agents working 24-hour shifts to help cus- tomers stranded abroad, others raising money to take sick children on holiday ... a string of fantastic agents have already been nominated for the WTM Pride of Agents awards, launched in association with TTG and sponsored by Vir- gin Holidays. But there is still time to put yourself forward for the accolades, which seek to celebrate agents who have gone the extra mile for their customers in 2010.

The awards will be handed out at World

Travel Market on November 11. The overall win- ner will receive a seven-night holiday for two at the Hilton Ras Al Khaimah hotel in the United Arab Emirates, courtesy of Virgin Holidays.
