Join us on a new kind of fam trip!

Before I was blessed with the burden, sorry – joy of children, I never really understood how the nature of a holiday could change.

Before, everything was so easy – you booked somewhere with a nice beach, a few bars and Bob was your mother’s brother. You packed the night before and didn’t think about anything in advance apart from having a good time – oh, such carefree days... But not now. There’s

so much more to consider: flight times, which resort, which hotel, when to go, when not to go, location of rooms, what to take, what not to take, kids clubs, babysitters, menus, high chairs... Get it right and a family holiday

is magical, but a potential disaster when it doesn’t quite go to plan. That’s why I’m delighted we’re reintroducing Kids in The Med; luxury family holidays created by genuine luxury family experts – every one of our team is a mum, a dad, an auntie or an uncle. Fancy seeing what all the fuss is

about? We’re hosting a W&Onderful educational with a difference; where the star of the show is probably under five years old. If you sell family luxury, but don’t get the opportunity to sample it for yourself, then we’re about to change all that –drop me a line at leemarshall@itc-uk.com and tell me in 50 words or less why you and your bundle of joy should join us. We’ll select the three best

entries to come join us on a little trip. After all, you’re all family to us.

Are ILTM events as beneficial as we hear? And where can UK buyers register? Marco Balia, head of the buyer team, explains

Question answer

What makes ILTM such must-attend events? ILTM is an invitation-only event, with all agents “vetted” in advance and hosted in prestigious hotels. At ILTM in Cannes over the three-day event, agents get to meet with up to 60 suppliers. They reflect luxury across the board, representing myriad global luxury travel choices – from private islands to cruises and safaris; to well-known hotel brands and capital cities; boutique hotels to undiscovered gems.

How do I get an invitation? UK agents are eligible to attend ILTM Japan, ILTM Africa and ILTM in Cannes. To attend, you should be a reputable luxury travel agent/buyer, booking a significant amount of business to multiple destinations. We have a team who are solely tasked with recruiting, vetting and communicating with buyers throughout the year. Do contact me (marco.balia@reedexpo. co.uk) to register your interest and we can begin to qualify you.

How do you decide which agents to invite? A buyer’s productivity as well as his or her reputation are the most important questions we ask. We pledge to introduce at least 30% new buyers to each event.

ILTM events in 2016 ILTM Africa (Cape Town): April 4-6. UK buyers may apply but applications are now closed. Travelweek Sao Paulo by ILTM: May 3-6. UK brands (not buyers) ILTM Asia (Shanghai): May 30- June 2. UK brands (not buyers) ILTM Americas (Riviera Maya): September 26-28. UK brands (not buyers). ILTM Cannes: December 5-8. UK brands and buyers may apply to participate. ILTM Japan (Tokyo): March 2017. UK brands and buyers may apply.

What’s the difference between each ILTM event? UK agents can apply to attend our events in Japan, Africa and the global event in Cannes. ILTM Americas, ILTM Asia and Travelweek Sao Paulo by ILTM are only for buyers from these specific regions. Luxury travel brands can attend as exhibitors at every ILTM event, apart from Africa, which is entirely for African product.

What do you ask of the buyers you host? In return for providing up accommodation, buyers must commit to attend all pre-scheduled appointments.

Madrid builds up its luxury credentials

Madrid’s luxury hotel quota is set for a boost in the coming years. High demand is already pushing an increase

in average rates, which have seen Europe’s biggest rise in value terms for the second year running, according to HVS. Average rates were up by 14%

year-on-year, with the city having seen a 10% increase in visitor numbers. Four Seasons is predicted to open its 215-

room hotel in 2017 at the Centro Canalejas development, combined with exclusive retail. Spain’s second W is also on the way, with

Starwood planning to open the 141-room W Madrid in 2018. Spanish chains are also making sure they keep pace in the luxury stakes. In January, the flagship 146-room Barcelo

Emperatiz opened as a reworking of an existing hotel in the city’s Salamanca neighbourhood. Meanwhile Melia is investing €19 million in the

old Ambassador Hotel to create the 180-room Gran Melia Palacio De Los Duques. Mandarin Oriental is also renovating the

167-room Hotel Ritz Madrid in 2017. Within the boutique sector, Pablo Carrington, will open Totem (left), a new 67-room hotel, in June, while the 206-room Only You Atocha also opens that month.
