Think outside the pool!

Water Journeys

Inspired by a flowing stream, this new modular game concept from the Canadian company Vortex is – like many of the best ideas – simple but effective.

Children use their intuition to guide objects through a labyrinth of ground level water channels, just as they might when playing on the beach. Formed from fibreglass-reinforced concrete, there is no danger of the course being washed away, making it suitable for a wide range of venues including waterparks, municipal parks and as part of wider landscape design projects. Kids can move the various interactive strainers, paddles and dams to explore different types of water flow and understand the interconnectivity of nature as their actions impact someone else’s further down the stream. Though children are the primary target market, Water Journeys offers a social and collaborative experience for participants of all ages. It’s also very cost effective to run. The first installation, comprising a single module as pictured here, has been made at Gilroy Gardens in California. Vortex plans to offer future installations as a combination of four different modules.

“For waterpark operators sometimes it difficult to earn extra income because you can’t charge extra for a slide,” says Markus Beyr of the Austrian technology and ideas company Attraktion, “but people will pay for this.”

Beyr is talking about his new waterproof 4D cinema, which features effects including fountain, waterfalls, water guns, water explosions, rain, wind, fog, haze, strobes, LED lights or a full cinema flood. Obviously you’ll want to wear a swimsuit. More familiar 4D effects on offer include seat vibration, leg ticklers, neck blasts and 3-DOF motion. The first of what will become a library of custom-produced movies

designed to make the most of Cinesplash’s effects is called Storm Riders. Available in 36, 60 and 80-seat configurations, or any other size on request, the first theatre (pictured here) is now operational in Ningbo, China. Attraktion promises to give Cinesplash customers a helping hand by assisting them with their communication and promotions strategy.

Similar systems are being offered by SimexIwerks and Kraftwerk (in partnership with Polin).
