"By improving engagement you automatically improve retention, which protects millions of pounds from the risk of early withdrawal"

maximising the opportunity to intervene, so a lot of their data was being held on diff erent systems with limitations of access via application plug ins (APIs). Key to the users was knowing

how engaged a student was so that they could off er the best advice on use of resources to improve the student’s outcomes. In reality when a student had an issue they were going to more than one of their support networks to ask for help. However as there was no joined-up system no one had an overall picture of what engagement had taken place and what was recommended hence duplication in eff ort, and even confl icting advice, was common. Using Solutionpath’s STudent Retention, Engagement and Monitoring (STREAM) service we were able to join up their data sources to create a single view of the information available to save time and duplication, and ensure the student now gets the

right support. The net result is bet er one to one relationships, improving outcomes, reducing re-sits for students and, whilst it is early days, retention is improving. Another one of our clients, a

university based in the North East, had an issue with student retention. Identifying the issue was diffi cult for the university since at endance isn’t mandatory. By using Solutionpath’s STREAM service we have empowered their team with the knowledge of how their students are engaging so they can see if a student is at ending lectures, as well as if they are visiting the library, downloading learning resources etc. Now they know how students are engaging they can tailor support to the students’ needs based on their resource usage.

Q: How do you see the insight and foresight delivered by data analytics evolving? ✥ I believe we’re moving

towards more individualised learning analytics solutions. Taking a purely academic view of

someone’s learning process is wrong; we need to consider all the factors, whether mentoring engagements, time on placements or indeed the hours vested in the study rooms. It is evident that some people

learn from text-based resources, others from visual learning. We will soon be able to help students identify how they learn best, which will enable a learning experience to be delivered that suits an individual’s learning style, thus improving the student's outcomes. By improving engagement you automatically improve retention, which protects millions of pounds from the risk of early withdrawal. Essentially, you will get your

education in the best way that you consume it which will ultimately increase your life chances – refl ecting our ethos to make ‘fundamental diff erences’. UB
