An electronic diploma for an innovative University

John Bolland, Gradintel Product Lead at Tribal, explains how Swansea University became the first in the UK to gain recognition from the European Commission for electronic delivery of the European Diploma

A student-centric diploma supplement to record extra- curricular and other information electronically has long been the ideal; indeed many undergraduates today will expect this as the norm. However, electronic diploma supplements remain

innovative. Working with Tribal and its Gradintel solution, in January 2014 Swansea University became the first in the UK to gain the prestigious Diploma Supplement Label recognition from the European Commission for electronic delivery of its European Diploma Supplement, known as the e-HEAR (Higher Education Achievement Report). How the higher education institute facilitates

employability post-graduation is a key factor when deciding which university to atend. Swansea’s latest figures show an impressive overall employability of 93%. Through the new e-HEAR all 15,921 undergraduate and taught post-graduate students at the university will be able to beter promote and record their skills and achievements. What students won’t be aware of is the lengthy and

complex process the university underwent behind the scenes to achieve the e-HEAR: Swansea worked with UK organisations such as Universities UK (UUK), the British Council, UK NARIC (the National Agency responsible for providing information, advice and expert opinion on qualifications worldwide) and BIS (the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills) to gain the support of the European Commission for formal recognition of the UK HEAR as a document which can legitimately be classed as a Diploma Supplement. The technology and administrative system

underpinning the electronic diploma supplement is the Gradintel solution which integrates with Tribal’s SITS:Vision student and course management system. SITS is used by Swansea University to manage student administrative processes, from initial enquiry through to graduation and alumni, and acts as the central point of information on students and their qualifications. Huw Morris, Academic Registrar at Swansea University,

explains: “Our innovative approach supporting the e-HEAR on Tribal’s Gradintel solution is considered an exemplar model for the whole of Europe. In addition, by using the Gradintel solution, employers can search for potential employees electronically, thus enhancing the student’s employability and students can develop online employability profiles to be matched to relevant employment, research and further study opportunities.” The European Diploma Supplement is truly student-

centred and designed to be available to students throughout their career. Having it in electronic format also allows the student to record extra-curricular activities, industrial placements, mobility placements and other information such as prizes in a way that was not possible in paper form, making graduates more atractive and findable to employers. “This is a real benefit to students,” adds Huw, “as they

can now benefit from the excellent and internationally recognised package which the university provides under its Gateway to Employment initiative, of which e-HEAR will be the central core.” Not only does e-HEAR benefit students but it is also much

more efficient in terms of administration for the university. Swansea is now working to develop a Higher

Education Achievement Report for all research degrees students; a HEAR/Diploma Supplement for joint degree candidates; to record students' employability enhancing achievements; and to promote students' employment prospects through the Gradintel Software. Tribal works with 25 UK higher education institutions

to help them deliver their Higher Education Achievement Reports via the Gradintel platform. Building on the e-HEAR initiative, Tribal is now

extending its work with Swansea to maximise the value of the electronic achievement data to support improvements in graduate employability and in building closer relationships between the university and business. UB
