Notable Legal Work
MBDA is a world leader in missiles and missile systems, which engaged Epiq’s services. MBDA is a multi-national group with 10,000 employees on industrial facilities in France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany and the United States.
MBDA faced a major challenge: to balance the need to retain control and security over its information - which is often sensitive - with the need to disclose relevant information to the U.S. courts in support of litigation. The sheer volume of data - 300 terabytes – meant that extracting key documents in an efficient, timely and cost effective manner was a difficult task. Moreover, complex legal requirements regulating the transfer of the extracted data across borders added to the challenge.
It was important for reasons of security that the initial review of the data took place on MBDA’s premises and that, when transferred, the data was stored within a highly secure data centre. Epiq’s professionals devised a workflow which enabled MBDA to identify and review documents either within its UK offices, by its lawyers in the U.S., or through Epiq’s Tier III+, List X data centre in London, as appropriate. By devising a flexible
solution, using the most fitting software tools and techniques, Epiq was able to index and search highly sensitive data on MBDA’s premises as required. 200GB’s of sensitive information were processed and reviewed on site and those parts of the information which were deemed relevant to the U.S. litigation were extracted. Thereafter the relevant documents were transferred to Epiq’s Tier IV, ITAR certified, network in the U.S., where it could be loaded, searched and reviewed by MBDA’s U.S. lawyers, using Epiq’s proprietary software Documatrix.
MBDA was able to retrieve all relevant information and supply the relevant categories of documents to the relevant legal teams, ensuring compliance with stringent UK and U.S. legislation.
Chris Evans, Head of Legal, MBDA UK Limited: “It was essential that we retained control of our sensitive data whilst responding to a cross border requirement. Epiq’s approach was flexible,
