FARGO-MOORHEAD TO HOST THE 2014

U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS FOR CURLING Teamwork paid off in winning the event

T

he Fargo-Moorhead Athletic Commission is pleased to announce that the 2014 US Olympic Curling team will be determined at the Scheels Arena in Fargo in November 2013. The U.S. Curling Association (USCA) unanimously approved Fargo-Moorhead after many months of

reviewing bids. “We’re pleased to return to Fargo for the 2014 trials,” said Chris Sjue, President of the USCA. “Scheels Arena is an outstanding venue which received great reviews from athletes and fans during the 2011 Men’s and Women’s National Championships. The top American men’s and women’s teams will be competing to represent us at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia in February 2014. It will be exciting to witness this level of competition and this venue will give curlers the opportu- nity to experience playing in a setting similar to the Olympics.” A maximum of fi ve men’s teams and four women’s teams will compete Sunday, Nov. 10 through

Saturday, Nov. 16 with the possibility of a tie breaker on Sunday. The trials will be televised live on NBC Sports and planners are thrilled about the exposure the coverage will give their cities. The Fargo-Moorhead Athletic Commission is a division of the Fargo-Moorhead CVB and Steve Saxlund, Director of Sports for the commission said the cooperation of many people and businesses in the area contributed to the success of winning the opportunity to host the event. “We started working on this in 2009 when I met Rick Patzke, of USA Curling at the National Association of Sports Commissions’ Symposium in Denver. The Minnesota Sports Coalition hosted a Rockies game where we struck up a conversation about the possibility of hosting the world championships. We are now working toward capturing those for 2016. This is a step in the process and we are confi dent we can impress the committee with our facilities, our tremendous fans and the friendliness of the people in the region. Canadians are huge fans of curling and the Fargo-Moorhead area is certainly accessible to many of our Canadian neighbors.”

Many Americans will have the opportunity to visit the interactive Road to Sochi tour which will travel the US to cities such as New York, Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles and Fargo. “We are elated to be included in the company of those cities,” said Saxlund, “and we think the exposure will be incredible. We welcome visitors to come experience the excitement of the games and the interactive tour.”

Scheels Arena is located at 5225 31st Ave. S., Fargo, ND. For more information about this event, visit www.fargomoorhead.org, contact Steve Saxlund at 701.365-4563 or steve@fargomoorhead.org
