 Industry News FM industry bodies plan to unite

The British Institute of Facili- tiesManagement, Asset Skills, the Facilities Manage- ment Association and the Cleaning and Support Serv- ices Association have agreed to the concept of forming one single and united body to represent facilities manage- ment and support services. As the facilitiesmanage-

ment and support services professions havematured and evolved, so too must the bodies representing and leading them. This proposed merger recognises the grow- ing demand for a stronger, unified and collective voice that represents and pro- motes what is a fundamental component of our economy and day to day businesses. A steering group has been

established to progress the proposedmerger which brings together:

• The British Institute of

Facilities Management (BIFM), the professional body for facilities management. • Asset Skills, the skills

body representing facilities management, property, housing, cleaning and park- ing. • The Facilities Manage-

ment Association (FMA), the trade association for the fa- cilities management sector. • The Cleaning and Sup-

port Services Association (CSSA), the trade association for the cleaning and support services industry. The group will address

how these and other organi- sations could come together into this single body to meet the needs of the industry and the professionals that work within it. It will bring together the resources, ex- pertise and services of the

constituent parties to deliver what will be a strengthened and enhanced offering with greater representative influ- ence and increased prestige for individuals within the in- dustry. This proposal will be put forward to each con- stituent party’s membership for agreement and ratifica- tion. Gareth Tancred, chief ex-

ecutive officer of BIFM, said: “This is an excellent oppor- tunity for BIFM and its members. In the last year we have seen a marked rise in global demand for our services. We recognise that merger and acquisition ac- tivity is a way to achieve our strategic development ob- jectives to ensure we meet the needs of our individual and corporate members. The intention of these dis- cussions is to form an or-

BIFM opens new Channel Islands Branch

The British Institute of FacilitiesManagement (BIFM) is set to support the facilities management profession in the Channel Islands through the launch of a dedicated branch serving the area. After identifying a potential need for BIFM support in the Channel Islands, the institute under-

took research which showed a high interest level for a branch to serve the needs of FMs in the islands. Darren Etasse, deputy chair of the Channel Islands branch, said: “We are delighted that BIFM

is now active in the Channel Islands. A local branch will help members access BIFM events without the need to travel to mainland UK. I look forward to our branch delivering high quality and accessible development and networking events in both Jersey and Guernsey.” The branch was officially launched with an event in Jersey on 23 April, which was then mir-

rored in Guernsey on 24 April. Taking place at the Radisson Blu, St Helier, and St Pierre Park Hotel, St Peter Port, the two launch events included a welcome from Etasse, followed by Gareth Tancred, CEO of BIFM, giving an overview of the FM industry and the direction of the institute. Linda Hausmanis then spoke about BIFM qualifications in FM. Speaking on the launch events, which attracted over 100 attendees, Tancred said: “We were de-

lighted with the number of facilitiesmanagement professionals who took the time to join us. This really shows the need for the institute to support the Channel Islands. Anecdotal feedback in- cluded that this was the first local FM event for some delegates, and that it was great to bring the FM community together in this way. I look forward to supporting the branch, and will watch with interest the Islands’ growth as they advance the FM profession across the Channel Islands. As an institute we will continue to identify any potential gaps in coverage and consult withmembers as to how we can close these, enabling the best access to BIFMsupport for all our members.” The new branch is part of the BIFMSouthWest Region - winner of ‘Region of the Year’ in the

2012 BIFM Volunteer Recognition Awards - running popular events such as the quarterly train- ing days. The next scheduled Channel Islands event will be hosted in June, which will highlight the legal

issues and requirements of electrical, water and PAT testing. The new Channel Islands Branch follows on from the successful launch of the BIFM Southern

ganisation that is more in- fluential and with increased delivery capability, to reflect the growing scope of facili- ties management and sup- port services.” Sarah Bentley, chief exec-

utive officer of Asset Skills, said: “Asset Skills is de- lighted to be part of what will become the leading rep- resentative body for the fa- cilities management and cleaning industries in a move that builds on our cur- rent relationship with the CSSA and will also provide a strong base for our skills development work with the housing, property and park- ing sectors.” Chris Hoar, chief executive

officer of the FMA, said: “The UK FM industry is the most mature in the world, and the FMA acts on behalf ofmem- bers' interests to develop the

policies and plans that will shape the future of FM. Given thismarket maturity, it’s an obvious next step to consider consolidation. The FMA is therefore looking for- ward to working collabora- tively with BIFM, Asset Skills and the CSSA to arrive at a common goal that will bene- fit the industry and the indi- vidual and corporate members of each represen- tative body.” Peter Goodliffe, chair of the

CSSA, said: “CSSA welcomes the opportunity to explore closer working relationships with BIFM and FMA and sees this development as a logical step forward in coordinating the activities of membership bodies across the sector which builds on our recent decision to explore the po- tential for merger with Asset Skills.”

last year for the dealer with the largest overall growth. Catherall said: “Quality is

the main driver for our busi- ness, and it is therefore im- portant that we deal with only the best in the market. Nilfisk provides us with ex- cellent support and we are delighted with this award.” www.nilfisk.co.uk

107 years old and still flying high

The Nilfisk UK field sales team is looking stronger than ever and is reporting record figures for 2013. A great start to the year that celebrates the company’s 107th birthday. Nilfisk-Advance in the UK serves two distinct customer sec-

tors, commercial and Industrial, with a sales team providing regional support in both areas. The entire UK team is sup- ported by a logistics department that coordinates demonstra- tions and site surveys nationwide. Collectively the Nilfisk sales teamclaims to be larger than

any other in the UK. FromLands End to John O’Groats there is an experienced Nilfisk sales person to provide dedicated serv- ice and support irrespective of the application or nature of the customer. The current success is due in no small part to the ‘closer to market’ initiative that has seen stocks of fast moving machines, spare parts and accessories held in the UK. This development was driven by a real desire to react to the de- mands of the customer base for a faster flow of key products. Nilfisk UK recently exhibited at the Cleaning Show and en-

joyed a record event. LeighMason, sales director, said: “Our stand was incredibly busy. I am delighted to report that we took over 150 leads across the three days. We also enjoyed being visited bymany existing clients who came to meet the team who support them. A definite success.” www.nilfisk.co.uk
