Principle introduces Hybrid Cleaning


Principle Cleaning, the contract cleaning company with a portfolio of customers across London, has launched a new method of service delivery, named Hybrid Cleaning. The company launched Hybrid Cleaning,


the Principle Cleaning registered system/process predominately using a full time workforce to operate flexibly within any business, to develop ways of improving quality and service in a sustainable way, at a recent event at London’s Gherkin. Principle Cleaning has formulated this


specificmethod to provide its clients with a host of benefits to suit individual need. Shifts will be flexible,meaning that any work considered to be disruptive by the client in any part of the contract will be done out of core hours, whilst everything else will be undertaken during the day. One benefit of this approach is having cleaning staff available if the customer needs them during normal office hours for one off/spe- cial cleans as, typically, flexible shift lengths will be between 06.00 and 22.00. rector of Principle Cleaning, said: “For years, cleaning was part time, early evening/earlymorning working with typi- cally low rates of pay, and poor terms and conditions. Following the ‘big bang’ and the completion of CanaryWharf and Broadgate in the early 90s, things started to change. Banks took large buildings, and 40,000 sq. ft dealing floors became the norm,mean- ing that part time cleaning in large build- ings was no longer practical. In these large buildings cleaning was being done all night, still with poor pay rates, low productivity, and was difficult tomanage. This gradually


became socially unacceptable, against the CSR ambitions ofmajor businesses. Over the last few years rates of pay have contin- ued to improve, and the London Living Wage has now increased to £8.55, enabling us to develop a greater degree of full time labour.We began to look at how we could capture and develop this in amore struc- tured way, with the aimto substantially use full time staff working at both ends of the day. Hybrid still uses part time staff, but to a lesser degree, and in amore flexible way.” Smith continued: “There aremany bene-


fits of using full time staff: they aremore reliable, there is less turnover, it’s their main job so they aremore committed, and training becomesmoremeaningful.Ma- chinery and the battery age were at last giving the industry tools to work effectively in certain parts of building during the day. And that is how our Hybridmodel was born.Whilst the whole ethos with Hybrid is flexibility, we recognise that certain tasks must be done out of hours, so there will be no disruption, but clients adopting our new approach are ready to accept that there will be a greater presence during the day to carry out non-disruptive duties. Indeed, most clients find this a benefit, as the serv- ice becomesmore flexible, local and ad hoc requests can be dealt with immediately.” Smith concluded: “Hybrid is about de-


signing systems to work flexibly around your people and your business needs. There is no such thing as a typical Hybrid model, but if there was it would operate using two full time shifts from6amto 2pm and 2pmto 10pm- this gives us an ade- quate window both in themorning and the evening, depending on a client’s specific businessmodel, to carry out vacuuming, floormaintenance, and any other disruptive tasks out of hours, withmeeting rooms, empty offices, waste, common areas, washrooms, and restaurants all serviced during the day in accordance with building usage.We know that thismodel will vary dramatically depending on sector and building demographics -media buildings are different fromlegal firms, which are different frombanks, their density is differ- ent, usage is different and they are cleaned in a different way and at different times. Hybrid can take all this into account. In our experience we get better productivity work- ing smarter, whichmeans we can pay our staffmore, and give our clients better value formoney.
