Sustainable Cleaning
KärcherAcademyCleaning Tips: Using efficient products to improve sustainability credentials
For contract cleaners, sustainability is more than just a buzzword. Contract cleaners and facilities management providers constantly seek to provide effi- ciency gains to their customers through use of improved cleaning processes. But asmore andmore customers look for help in fulfilling their corporate social re- sponsibility objectives, contract cleaners must now look towards providing more sustainable products to those customers as the next step in efficiency improvement. Kärcher’s eco!efficiency range of prod-
ucts is designed to reduce operating costs, at the same time improving sustainability credentials by reducing resource con- sumption and providing products that are responsiblymanufactured and highly recy- clable. Kärcher eco!efficiency machines fall into
two categories -machines with full-time, dedicated low power consumption, and machines with eco!efficiency mode that can be selected for dailymaintenance cleaning. The T 10/1 eco!efficiency and T 12/1 eco!efficiency tub vacuums are dedi- cated low-consumptionmachines, featur- ing optimised air channels that enable the

machines to provide ideal daily cleaning performance fromonly a 750Wmotor, re- ducing electricity consumption by around 40%and noise by several
decibels. Many Kärcher scrubber driers feature an eco!ef- ficiencymode, which provides ideal per- formance for daily cleaning whilst reducing power, water and detergent consumption and, in turn, extending the run time and re- ducing operating noise. For heavier-duty jobs, themachines can be used in other, non-eco!efficiencymodes.
Because eco!efficiency optimises power
consumption, it also reduces noise. For ex- ample, the T 12/1 eco!efficiency tub vac- uumprovides a noise level of only 56 dB(A), reducing volume by around 50%compared to standardmodels. Kärcher scrubber dri- ers also provide noise reductions of several decibels when used in eco!efficiencymode thanks to optimised drivemotor speeds and reduced vacuumnoise, potentially in- creasing the cleaning window. Even with a tub vacuum, a 40%saving in
power consumption could reduce electricity bills by up to £45 per year permachine (as- suming themachine is used three hours per day, five days per week, in a business paying 10p per kWh).Multiply this by the number ofmachines on each site, and the potential for real-life cost savings for the customer become clear. Kärcher eco!efficiency products can give
contract cleaners and FMproviders an edge in tendering for new business and im- proving the efficiency of existing cus- tomers. Formore information on how Kärcher’s

Promoting greater sustainability in the paper productsmarket
Sustainability is a key consideration for the paper disposables industry, with products requiring constant replenishment. The in- dustry has worked hard to minimise its im- pact on the environment but going green isn’t just about using recycled products. It’s about using products that promote a healthy living experience, enhance the workplace environment and help sustain valuable natu- ral resources. Emma Wood, marketing manager at Disposables UK Group, said: “In our eyes, sustainability is tied into the ethics of corporate and social responsibility. As a paper disposables company, we have a re- sponsibility to the environment and it is vital that we set an example and create products that use ethically sourced materials that are manufactured in a way that has as little im- pact on the environment as possible.” Disposables UK is committed to protecting

and preserving the environment. All its Bay West products have been developed with sustainability issues at the forefront. Emma Wood continued: “We only select the raw material for our pure pulp products from mills that use sustainable forests with strin- gent environmental policies that promise that for every one tree cut down, three new trees are planted. By proactively sustaining the forest, we ensure that our process does- n’t impact adversely on the environment. Our sustainability commitments led to Dis- posables UK becoming the first company in the UK away fromhome industry to be awarded the Eco-Label for our Bay West range of hand towels, toilet tissue rolls and Eco-foamsoap. Thismeans our Bay West products are officially ‘green washroom’ products.”

towel. So we agreed to trial the blue Ka- trin product.” The Katrin product trials started in the
public washrooms, and were very suc- cessful. The products are now being in- stalled in wards, clinical areas, the main entrance areas and departments. The hospital is currently using 2000 Katrin hand towel dispensers and 350 Katrin System toilet roll dispensers, and the roll out is still ongoing. Smith said: “In all honesty, I was
amazed by the results. We stocked up for the trials using the same stock calculation methodologies that we had always used, and then found that we barely used 50%of what we had been using before. I believe that this is down to two things: greatly re- duced waste and visitors using less tissue.

With a carbon footprint of 18 million tonnes of CO2 per year and despite an increase in efficiency, the NHS has increased its carbon footprint by 40% since 1990. The two main targets for the NHS are now: a minimum reduction of 34%in carbon emissions by 2020 and an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050.
And it’s not just the cost savings, although that has proven to be significant. The infec- tion control team believes that they are muchmore hygienic, the high capacity re- duces the amount of labour required, and the lockable systemsmake them much more secure, especially in the public areas.” Glen Smith, director at Smith & Coburn,
said: “Like many in the industry, John had been using traditional bulk pack and c-fold products because they have been staple stock for many years. No one had taken the time to actually demonstrate how newer products could help him with hygiene and wastage issues. Katrin Systems and prod- ucts have helped him to underpin the hos- pital’s environmental and economic goals, as well as improve hygiene. Together, Smith & Coburn and the Katrin team have helped him to install the dispensers across
the hospital estate to ensure maximum success.” Mark Dewick, sales director, Metsä Tis-
sue UK & Ireland, said: “Demonstrating return on investment is fundamental in any purchasing decision, but Metsä Tissue also understands that hygiene is ab- solutely essential in the healthcare arena. We were confident that Katrin could de- liver against both these requirements and were very happy to support John in testing this under hospital conditions.” John Smith concluded: “It is great to find
suppliers that we can rely on to help us make a step change in our approach. It was important that both domestic services and the infection team were absolutely satisfied with the new products, and I am glad to say that this objective was com- pletely achieved.”
