Italian producer adds high-tech recording studios to his
multi-service company, writes Mike Clark
TEN YEARS after being launched by Bruno Carlo Oggioni, Art & Music Recording has moved into new multi- function 1,000sqm premises in
Gallarate, northern Italy. The impressive range of services provided (including a record company and label, specialising in pop, dance and R&B) has been expanded to include high- end recording facilities with five recording rooms and booths, and two control rooms, each with a Solid State Logic Duality SE console (which can be run in sync or in parallel). As well as being able to host a 40-member orchestra, thanks to
Full HD cabling throughout all the facility’s recording points, the studios’ 100sqm main recording area can also be used to record video clips or TV footage. Control room A (mainly
dedicated to mixing and stereo mastering) has a 48-channel SSL console, a main speaker system consisting of Dynaudio M4 + 2.2 system (two M4 + two 18” subwoofers) and Dynaudio Air20 2.1 system (two Air20 Master and an Air Base 24 sub) as nearfield

speakers. Hear Technologies HB4P Hear Back personal mixers are also at the artists’ disposal. Control room B, which

was Josif Vezzoli, founder in 2001 of JVAcoustics, a European leader for designing and building high-level recording studios. Other Vezzoli studios include Steve Mac’s Rokstone in London and top Italian rocker Ligabue’s Zoo Aperto.

A&M rooms’ acoustic isolation is concerned, Vezzoli says: “They all feature a floating concrete floor using Mason Industries’ Jack up system, completely eliminating sound transmission via vibrations, even at low frequencies. On this, we built ‘box-in-a-box’ isolation ‘shells’ – sturdy wooden structures covered in birch plywood and a double layer of high-density plaster, filled with rock wool. The acoustic treatment applied to these shells consists of complex wooden frames containing sound absorbent material, baffles and silenced air-conditioning plenums.” Reflecting elements such as panels in different types of wood, natural stone and fabrics are integrated in the rooms’ design for acoustic purposes (controlled sound diffusion, diffraction and so on) as well as for their stylish designer aesthetics. Vezzoli opines: “A&M is one
of the best European facilities as far as the various rooms’ technical and construction quality, ergonomics and functionality are concerned. The integration of the two control rooms with the various recording areas and a large amount of glazing enable engineers,
producers and artists to work and create in absolute comfort.” A&M’s high standards also
enabled it to be chosen as an authorised Apple training centre, a certified Steinberg training centre and an official Steinberg and Waves beta tester. Its Music Academy, twinned with Rockschool UK, is the only Italian school able o issue internationally valid certificates for all the contemporary music courses. As well as supplying the two consoles and relative SSL AlphaLink SX and AX interfaces, Solid State Logic’s Giovanni Blasi was also responsible for the rooms’ cabling (via Cablateam, a specialist company run with his brother Carlo). He explains: “As the facility has two audio control rooms, it was important to realise wall panels with the various different connectors required for the wall boxes in all the rooms, to ensure flexible interference-free access to all the sources from both control rooms. Now an acclaimed record
producer, Milan-born Oggioni began playing piano at an early age and is an accomplished performer and recording artist in his own right (under the stage name of Dr Shiver), so he knew what was needed on both sides of the board.
On the philosophy behind opening a recording facility in spite of the state of the Italian economy, he says: “Opening a commercial recording studio counting on third-party clients alone would have been insane. But, thanks to our artist roster and the fact that we can provide a comprehensive package (video production, web TV and audio streaming and post-production, publishing company, graphic design and more) the project made business sense, as it means no outsourcing, plus the possibility of attracting discerning commercial clients.”n
