SCOTTISH RAIL FOCUS
Glasgow Hillhead – a milestone
Glasgow Hillhead station opened to the public in September 2012 following a major overhaul. Norman Emery, MD of Selux Lighting, talks about Selux’s contribution to the project.
was an honour to be invited to contribute to the refurbishment of this great city’s iconic transport system. Selux has an established reputation for high quality, efficient and cost-effective lighting systems. Nevertheless Hillhead presented us with some significant and unique challenges.
It
Selux’s development on the initial specification for Hillhead started in 2010 and we worked closely with architects Aedas and the principal contractor Clancy Docwra to meet the unique demands of the first station in the Glasgow subway modernisation programme.
The platform brief was for a continuous service boom to accommodate single runs of downward lighting and twin runs of upward lighting as well as power and communication cabling. The
system needed to be able to match the curve of the platform and be easily transportable from the surface to trackside.
The two platform booms accommodated over 120 high-spec extruded aluminium luminaires, protected to IP65 and IK10 and to LUL section 12 fire standards. A further 100 luminaires were used for the concourse as well as bespoke direct/indirect lighting masts for escalator runs.
Creating a boom of these dimensions required the commissioning of specialist large-scale extrusions and sufficient internal compartmentalisation to meet fire and EMC safety requirements. All of this makes for a fairly heavy piece of kit, with each one of 42, 3.5-metre boom sections weighing nearly
Robust power distribution solutions
CSE Rail’s Doug Forbes discusses its range of Sig box units. CSE
Rail is a brand name of Control Systems and Equipment Ltd and
is dedicated to the supply of innovative and cost effective power distribution solutions to Network Rail.
Our range of Sig boxes have been supplied since 1997 and now have an installed base of over 10,000 units.
In order to facilitate change and bring about infrastructure cost reductions in 2009, CSE Rail was invited by Network Rail to participate in the design and development of a new range which were required to be double insulated or touch proof products.
Using the Network Rail specifications, we developed a range to the specification in the same space envelope as the original Six box units. The basis of the design was to blend the robustness of metal with the insulating properties of plastic which was achieved following in-depth research and CSERail CoatTM was developed. Utilising a mild steel chassis, which is subject to a cleansing process before application of the insulation, we were

able to achieve a dielectric strength of 6,000 volts.
CSE Rail initially completed the development of the Class 2 Sig Boxes which has the same form fit and function design of the previous solutions ensuring a legacy fit and featuring the double insulated coating providing protection against electric shock.
Although the specification did not request the design of an earthed or Class I variant, it was decided to take the specifications a stage further and offer a Class I that features an earth connection and the ability to terminate 3 core 120mm cable with a core protective earth.
The Class I and Class II units have three different versions within each range, each benefiting from form 4 separation.
CSE Rail is now the only supplier of Class 1 and Class 2, 650 volt power distribution modules within the UK with NR approval numbers PA PA05/05556 and PA 05/05069.

80kg, and each complete boom weighing over 1.5 tons. For this reason the whole system was developed as a 3D model and stress-tested by structural engineers before being approved for construction.
Selux has learnt much from this project and we look forward to integrating our experience into future commissions so as to further enhance our capability for large scale lighting systems.
With 2014 set to be a very important year for visitors to Glasgow, Selux is delighted to have been able to contribute to the modernisation at the heart of the city’s transport network.
