Southern Railway chooses Q-Pulse to improve safety management and drive efficiency
S
outhern Railway has implemented Gael Ltd’s Q-Pulse safety management solution
to improve both the efficiency and accuracy of its safety reporting and ease the management of its investigations and recommendations.
The solution links with RSSB’s SMIS safety incident database and encourages a wider engagement of safety management among Southern’s 4,000 strong staff.
Steve Enright, Southern’s head of safety and operational standards, said: “For Southern, there was an ever-growing challenge for efficiency and there was a need to have the tools at hand that simplified safety processes
and workloads. In addition to this, we required to ensure consistency and quality of work through a systematic approach that allows for the management of safety priorities.
“Q-Pulse is used as an accident and incident reporting management solution that informs the SMIS database without the need to have double entry of information. It allows us to achieve efficiency and accuracy of our safety reporting and improve the management of investigations and recommendations by easing our workload.”
Southern’s Q-Pulse solution significantly reduces the need to re-key data into the SMIS
The UK’s rail business of the year has chosen to team up with Scottish software company Gael Ltd to enhance safety across their organisation, explains the company’s founder Donald Maciver.
Outstanding passenger and staff safety
“Gael is proud to partner with Southern Railway on this exciting project, building on our success with other major train operating companies. The rail industry is under constant pressure to demonstrate improved efficiency and build on its current record of outstanding passenger and staff safety. We look forward to working with Southern Railway to develop a more efficient and effective safety management system.” – Donald Maciver
database and internal tracking tools, providing a solution for electronic record keeping and workflow tracking with a full range of analytical tools in one controlled location. In short, Q-Pulse helps increase awareness of accidents and incidents across the whole of the Southern Railway organisation.
Enright added: “Through Q-Pulse, we are able to interrogate and interpret our safety reporting data, making it easier for us to continually improve and, by being able to do this in real time and with less workload, then the benefits are easier to harvest.
“Meeting the industry and regulatory standards is a requirement of both our Q-Pulse system and our business. Q-Pulse assists us in terms of ease and completeness of information reporting and also in a reduction in timescales.
“As well as the main benefits, Q-Pulse promotes a wider engagement with our employees on safety management, as they see this system encourage improvement of our safety management and overall safety culture.
“Q-Pulse is an effective system that we have seen successfully implemented in similar rail companies and in addition, Gael has proved to be an adaptive and flexible partner in the development of our Q-Pulse system.”
