October 19 Like a rainbow

The new South West Trains initiative to improve communication with customers is an intelligent and easily accessible way to share information with passengers.

If there is the threat of disruption, it is imperative to inform travellers about it as soon as possible, so they can begin to re-plan their journey.

Information must be up-to-date, readily available and easy to understand – all of which the new ‘Rainbow Board’ provides.

Additionally, the tool will be both online and in a physical presence at stations, making it as widely available as possible.

Other operators could take a leaf out of

South West Trains’ book on their interaction with passengers and consider innovative approaches to displaying information on service status.

October 3 Branson vindicated?

Imagine, just imagine, if the DfT had not uncovered these shambolic mistakes in its sums until a few years down the line.

The cost and waste of taxpayers’ money, already grotesque, would be phenomenal, as the failed bidders took the Government to court.

Patrick McLoughlin, barely

a month into his new role as transport secretary, cannot be blamed – but Justine Greening, an accountant by training, does not

come out of this well.

Could this astonishing turn of events precipitate changes to the entire franchising process? Hopefully at least one of the two major reviews comes up with something: after 15 months and tens of millions of pounds spent deciding who should run West Coast services, we now have no idea.

Many wags refer to the DfT as ‘Daft’ – this goes way beyond daft. What an embarrassment.

September 27 Maintaining excellence

The latest performance fi gures show a signifi cant improvement in trains arriving on time, resulting in the best fi gures for this period ever recorded.

Train operators should be looking very carefully at their operations during this period, to ascertain what factors have led to such great scores.

This good news must be turned into best practice, and encouraged across the network and throughout the year.

Delayed trains are not just bad for passengers left waiting, they are bad for the industry; damaging their reputation, losing revenue and affecting the number of services that can be allocated into the schedule.

So well done TOCs, and keep it up! i More blogs like this at:
