Efficient railway engines

MAN showcased its efficient six-cylinder and twelve-cylinder D2862 LE63x and D2876 LUE63x railway engines for the first time at InnoTrans 2012 in Berlin. These two engines are MAN’s response to current customer demands for greater power, argues company spokesman Dr Detlef Hug.
W
ith the D2862 LE63x, which is a completely new development, MAN is
offering an efficient twelve-cylinder engine for railway operation with outputs from 588 kW to 735 kW (800 hp to 1,000 hp) at 2,100 rpm.
For increased power, capacity has been increased, by comparison with its predecessor, to 24.2 litres. The D2862 LE63x engine is based on the latest V-12 generation from MAN, which has already proven itself in a multitude of applications in agriculture, marine propulsion and decentralised power generation. The compact design of the powerful, high-torque engine is specially adapted to underfloor applications, so that this MAN engine is ideal for installation in railcars (DMU – Diesel Multiple Unit) and maintenance vehicles.
Compact engine
The D2876 LUE63x is one of the most compact engines in its class. This efficient 12.8-litre MAN engine also offers a range of outputs that has been expanded relative to its predecessor to up to 390 kW (530 hp) at 1,800 rpm.
With the further development of the six- cylinder engine in a third generation, MAN has deliberately made few changes to the engineering design.
Reiner Rößner, sales manager of MAN Engines at MAN Truck & Bus AG, said: “In the D2876 LUE63x we’re offering our customers the sophisticated, tried and tested technology of our efficient MAN railway engines. Simultaneously, railway operators also get maximum flexibility for retrofitting. Benefits range from the identical interfaces on the powerpack to the spare parts that customers already have in stock and can continue using.”
MAN’s engines provide the same flexibility with regard to integration in the powerpack
thanks to their ability to interoperate with all types of transmissions and generators in this power class. The new six- and twelve-cylinder engines comply with the current Stage 3b exhaust-gas regulations.
Individual solutions for different drive concepts
With the new introduction of the twelve- cylinder D2862 LE63x as well as the six- cylinder D2876 LUE63x, MAN offers solutions for the most varied of customer requirements.
If the type of operation requires, a multi- engine concept can be realised using flexible load management that distributes the load amongst several engines. MAN provides solutions tailor-made to fulfil customers’ demands in terms of installation conditions and power design. In this way, MAN responds flexibly to the differing philosophies of railway equipment manufacturers.
More power for greater comfort
The general trend is towards greater power requirements, due to increased numbers of energy consumers in railway applications. For example, as consumers of electricity, higher-performance air conditioning systems and passenger information systems increase
the
demands placed on the engines.
The increased power offered by its efficient six- and twelve-cylinder engines means that MAN has the solutions that the manufacturers of railway equipment need.

And railway customers also benefit from the enhanced comfort and expanded service offerings.
Diesel engine range for rail applications
MAN offers efficient six- and twelve-cylinder diesel engines for operation in railcars, mainline and shunting locomotives and track-maintenance vehicles as well as for power generation. Outputs start from 257 kW (350 hp) for railcars or 265 kW (360 hp) for locomotives and extend to 809 kW (1,100 hp).
For railway gensets, the outputs range from 230 kW to 543 kW (313 hp to 738 hp). MAN engines are distinguished by their compact installation, which can be implemented in a space-saving manner either underfloor or in the roof, as well as by great reliability at low lifecycle costs. Their significant advantages are fast load pick-up, comfortable running performance and economy in continuous operation while complying with the stipulated exhaust-emission standards.
