New research centre for Hitachi
Hitachi Rail has launched a Euro- pean Rail Research Centre, part of Hitachi Europe’s Transportation Energy & Environment Research Laboratory.
The centre will be based in Hitachi’s London offi ces and will focus on rolling stock design, both interior and
exterior, manufacturing
practices, maintenance and Traffi c Management Systems.
Alistair Dormer, executive chairman and CEO of Hitachi Rail Europe, commented: “Having the new European Rail Research Centre located in our European
headquarters is a great asset and shows the level of long- term thinking and investment by Hitachi’s Research & Development Division. While Hitachi Rail Europe builds up its manufacturing facility in the UK, the fi ndings of the Research Centre will feed into how we best establish the processes in the plant.”
The contract covers the design, supply and installation of 90 single- track km of new electrifi cation.
A “delighted” Martin Brown, Balfour
Beatty Rail’s project director, said: “Our latest
innovations on this project will demonstrate our commitment towards our zero harm initiatives, sustainability and the seven day railway.”

MTU has been selected as the preferred supplier to design, develop and service 250 Powerpacks for Hitachi’s IEP Super Express trains.
The contract is worth over €200m, and MTU will supply Powerpacks with 700kW engines of the type 12V 1600 R8OL, as well as servicing for 27.5 years.

The safest choice in fl oor tiles
Bethany Skinnard, of public relations at Dorset Woolliscroft, says the company understands that the design vision of architects, specifi ers and trade professionals has to balance both form and function. Therefore, the Dorset Woolliscroft range of slip-resistant tiles has been specifi cally designed and manufactured to offer the safest choice in fl oor tiles for all rail-related projects and public transport environments, she says.
As a result of UK and European legislation, increasing importance is being placed on specifying and sourcing the most effective anti- slip fl ooring. It is imperative that the product specifi ed performs to the required standard for the long
term. The latest Stations Code of Practice document for
station fl ooring stipulates that ‘All fl oors should have some slip resistance when wet
or to exits, the dry’*.
From platforms to ticket halls, walkways to footbridges and entrances
Dorset
Woolliscroft brand includes a choice of non-refl ective fl ooring solutions. Whether tough tiles for
high footfall areas or slip resistant tiles for wet and hazardous areas are required, Dorset Woolliscroft tiles are the safest choice. Offering exceptional performance and safety standards, the anti-slip options available include fl oor tiles with added aggregate throughout the body of the tile to further aid the tile’s slip resistance.
All of the tiles and fi ttings are fully vitrifi ed and the comprehensive collection
is ideal for both
internal and external use. Tough, durable and hard-wearing, the tiles offer exceptionally high slip resistance ratings, from R10 up to R12C. Dorset Woolliscroft tiles are suitable for a broad range of applications where durability, cleanability and safety are important, especially in larger public areas.
