The tool: KOMET KUB Pentron® Indexable insert drill for extreme applications
Manufacturing Software
Real-Time Viewer application customized by Scytec Con- sulting offers user- and company-based configurable dashboards for shop-floor monitoring of OEE data.
The idea: Providing stability and dimensional accuracy in very diffi cult drilling conditions up to 5xD.
Why it’s great:
• Sustained performance in drilling conditions previously limited to 3xD.
• Up to 20% greater feed and speed rates compared to similar drills.
• Designed for use with steel, cast metal, aluminum, and stainless materials.

The latest solutions for shop-floor data collection and analysis come from enterprise resource planning (ERP) software developers and from shop-floor data collection and analysis specialists. Some newer features include systems that are optimized for use with increasingly popular hand-held mobile devices, smartphones and tablet computers. “The most important point is to convert the volume of manufacturing shop-floor data into actionable information,” states Jim Abbassian, president, Predator Software (Portland, OR). “For example, say at a given machine a Machine Alarm happens at 11:05 pm and when you get that data, you know that the current critical part number has stopped producing at a bottleneck workcenter for a Tier 1 customer where there is no scheduled third shift. This is actionable information that can make a real-world difference.”
Machine Monitoring Mandatory for Lean
Real-time data collection and monitoring of machine tools for measuring OEE metrics is essential for successful lean manufacturing efforts and critical shop-floor processes, many observers note. Yet in spite of this need for critical data analy- sis, a large percentage of shops simply don’t have machine monitoring, notes David Edstrom, president and chairman of MTConnect Institute (McLean, VA). Edstrom, who recently gave a talk on shop-floor networking and communication and the MTConnect protocol at the DMG / Mori Seiki (Hoffman Estates, IL) Innovation Days, says that only about 4–5% of machine tools are monitored today. “Running a shop without
