odular systems aren’t anything new to model airplanes. Their use has varied from swapping just a power pod, or a radio sys-
tem or doing both. Sometimes it worked well, sometimes not. When successful it of- fered two or more planes in “one”. The idea has always been pretty appealing. Pull the system out, plug it into another plane and try a different sort of flying. Guillow’s is a well-known name among hobbyists for their extensive line of free - flight planes, and now has recently entered the R/C field by way of a neat new modular system they call Snap&Fly. This new entry offers three planes in one package. All mold- ed foam, they might seem more of the same but there are some unique features to them that might find use beyond just the three planes offered. And to sweeten the pot quite a bit more, everything you need—Base Mod- ule, Airplane Modules, batteries, transmit- ter, spare motor and prop, a very good and
thorough manual—comes in one complete package. First of all, the planes: they range from
the conventional to the unique. The most conventional one is the simple biplane, called the Biplane Module. Nothing too ex- traordinary about that. Just a bit more dif- ferent is the V-tail Module. Then there’s the pretty unique Canard Module. It’s almost a double wing plane more than a canard. All of these planes feature a thin molded
foam shell, and each of them has an open “chin” area on the bottom of the fuselage from the wing forward. That’s where the Base Module can be mated to the plane. That module contains motor, receiver with built- in ESC, magnetic actuators, and a small 90 mAh single cell Li-Po. And it also has a unique pushrod arrangement that works surprisingly well despite its simplicity. While there’s more to say about the planes
