UPS & STANDBY POWER Socomec launches new UPS specifically designed for the UK Rail Sector at InfraRail 2012.

Borri's UPS driving forward in Sweden

uperior reliability, first-class manufacturing and expert technical support has secured leading supplier of high-efficiency Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), Borri Ltd, another order from an internationally acclaimed transportation parts manufacturer. Volvo has purchased a transformer- based B9000 125kVA for its new hardening plant in Sweden from Borri's exclusive Swedish distributors, Elrond Komponent AB, which supplied Volvo with its first transformer based 100kVA UPS over five years ago and has been responsible for the maintenance of the unit ever since. Exceptional attention to detail, quality engineering and excellent customer service provided by Elrond, coupled with high- quality robust equipment design, meant that Volvo had no hesitation in choosing another Borri UPS for its emergency power.

he European manufacturer of critical power systems has developed a rail specific UPS – the IP+ Rail - which will be launched at InfraRail on 1st May 2012. The system, which has already been approved for use by London Underground, is engineered for high performance critical power applications in the most challenging operating environments. The equipment is housed within a compact,

T robust steel-framed

enclosure – almost twice the thickness of standard UPS cabinets - and has anti-corrosion tropicalised circuit boards. Available with IP31 or IP52 ingress protection, this system will operate in environments where there is conductive dust or dripping water.

The electromagnetic disturbance immunity level is double that required by European

standards and the internal components meet the strict, low smoke requirements of LUL and other rail sector customers. The IP+ Rail is available from 10 – 80 kVA for three-phase models and 10 – 60 kVA for single-phase models with scalable power and the facility to parallel up to 6 units. Socomec has its own highly trained engineering team which has the necessary trackside training and accreditation to install and support equipment throughout the product life-cycle. The business also has a highly experienced projects group which can work with the client’s engineering team to optimise system performance and robustness. Socomec has commercial and engineering operations around the globe. Its European manufacturing plants produce the world’s most comprehensive range of highly energy efficient and reliable UPS and rectifier products, many of which are suitable for mass transportation applications. William Hughes announces new spring making capabilities

W

illiam Hughes has announced that it can now form compression springs in wire sizes up to 8mm diameter and torsion springs in wire up to 6mm diameter. The new capabilities follow on from a significant investment in new machinery at its manufacturing facilities in the UK and Bulgaria. This follows recent announcements that the company has gained the prestigious Nadcap accreditation for its heat treatment facility - a process that is particularly important to the aerospace industry. The new coiling machine at the UK factory in Dorset means that William Hughes can now supply heavier

duty compression springs using 5mm to 8mm dia. wire. These are typically used as return valves in products such as hydraulic valves. The new machine in Bulgaria has the capacity for torsion springs up to 6.0mm dia. These larger springs are widely used in the automotive industry and have applications in products such as chain tensioners.

Astute Ellis secures repeat cleat deal E

mperor cable cleats from Ellis will be installed in the first five of the Ministry of Defence’s new Astute-class nuclear powered

submarines after BAE Systems confirmed a repeat specification for the fifth boat in the fleet. The North Yorkshire-based manufacturer received its first order from BAE Systems Maritime - Submarines back in 2003, with the BAE site in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria taking delivery of the latest order just last month. Throughout the duration of the project Ellis has supplied bespoke two, four, six and nine-way versions of its Emperor cleats, a standard trefoil version, and its Protect cable straps. Paul Nolan, UK sales manager for Ellis, said: “Repeat orders are the kind of business sales people, no matter what sector they work in, dream of. But to receive five significant repeat orders over such a long period, with the potential of two more to follow, is virtually unheard of.”

orbar Torque Tools is to move to a new 170,000 square feet production site, over three times larger than its existing factory. This is to expand manufacturing output and so deal with increased demand for its precision engineering products, 75% of which are exported worldwide to over 100 countries. The company is remaining in Banbury, Oxfordshire, where it has been established since its launch in the 1940s, demonstrating continuing commitment to the town and its workforce, most of whom live locally. This expansion means employment opportunities, exemplifying a resurgence in the UK’s engineering sector. Norbar is a family run company and the world’s leading specialist in the design, development and production of torque tightening and measuring equipment. There are Norbar sales companies in Australia, China, India, New Zealand, Singapore and the USA, but manufacturing is carried out in Banbury, where Norbar produces products for applying torque and also for measuring torque. Completion on the purchase of the new site took place on 20th March 2012.
