mARCH 2012
www.lawyer-monthly.com
Welcome to the March edition of Lawyer Monthly. As seasons prepare to change in many parts of the world, from winter to spring in the Northern hemisphere and vice versa in the Southern hemisphere, it is interesting to take a look at the legal and corporate worlds to see if such a change is being felt there as well.
EDITOR’S NOTE
The last month, as always, has seen plenty of action within the world’s business and legal news pages. The ongoing story of the Eurozone crisis developed a step further earlier this month with the signing by all but two of the 27 EU member states of a fiscal treaty, aiming to enforce budget discipline within the bloc. The UK and the Czech Republic refused to sign the treaty which looks to prevent countries from running up huge debts which can act as a catalyst for bailouts such as Ireland, Portugal and Greece have seen over the last year.
Also this month, I was interested to read that Brazil’s economy has become the sixth largest in the world, overtaking the UK. According to Finance Minister Guido Mantega, the Brazilian economy has now been calculated to be worth $2.5tn (£1.6tn). This is of course fabulous news for everyone in Brazil – businesses and lawyers!
As usual, we have plenty of news from the corporate and legal worlds this month, as well as several exclusive features providing insight, analysis and comment. Our features this month include a special report on Arbitration across the world and an interesting comparison of the Energy industries in the US and Scotland from Derek McCulloch of Gillespie Macandrew LLP and Douglas C. MacCourt of Ater Wynne LLP. In addition, we also speak to Daniel Max from Marsh, the world’s biggest insurance company, about the world of Private Equity and M&A.
As always, I hope you enjoy this month’s issue of Lawyer Monthly, and I look forward to bringing you more news and insight next month.
