When Cal, Bob and Richard, three retired, very successful music educators, who were mentored by Harv Erdman, were asked what qualities of Harv’s they wished to emulate as teachers, all three offered almost the same responses:


• Harv was a people person before he was a teacher.


He remembered birthdays. He checked in on former student teachers. He liked people. Students were given an open invitation to the band room. He was there for them. They knew he cared.


• He was open, honest and fair. Harv Erdman


students knew, it was all business. When his standards were not met, he became very quiet. Students responded. Harv’s expectations were maintained.”


He taught by example. Students knew what to expect. He was fun, made the band room a home away from home. Parents wanted their children to experi- ence the joy of music in the setting of common values. The parents knew and trusted him. Parents supported his work and were happy to help when asked.


• Harv expected and achieved musical excellence.


When rehearsal started, the band focused and worked hard. The band never received less than a first at com- petition. He was organized, neat, kind and fair. He expected the same from his students.


• He was involved in the community.


He played in dance bands. He directed a church choir and he bowled. He had time for people. He made sure senior citizens of Wautoma had transportation to all his concerts. His high school band was active in the community perform- ing for local events.


• He was involved in professional growth.


He taught part time at UW-Green Bay, helped lay the foundations of WMEA. He was an advocate for improved percussion sections within the band. He
