Technology in Concerts: Creating Exciting and Memorable Performances

Presented by Mike Fedyszyn, Hartland

Mike Fedyszyn presented a series of creative ideas to turn concerts into mul- timedia experiences. Using Star Wars: In Concert, Video Games Live, the YouTube Symphony Orchestra, and Eric Whitacre’s Virtual Choir as inspiration, Fedyszyn advises us that with proper planning, the right equipment and good delegation, any concert can be greatly enhanced. Fedyszyn believes that concerts today should be con- ceptualized differently to meet the chang- ing expectations of students, the audience and school administrators. While superior repertoire and high-quality performances should remain the hallmark of any great concert, Fedyszyn expressed that may no longer be enough. Multimedia in concerts are an opportunity to showcase in greater detail what students are learning while advocating for the value of music educa- tion in a much more visual way. Some of the ideas Fedyszyn presented included the use of PowerPoint for a pre-concert slide-show containing everything from calendar announcements and advocacy blurbs to candid pictures and videos of students. During the concert, PowerPoint

can also be used to display student art- work and photos. An “Informance” can consist of things such as “A Day in the Life” video, or software demonstrations of SmartMusic in action. Student videos can be used to introduce each work, “Meet The Band” video can showcase each en- semble member and retrospective videos can showcase a special event such as a big trip, participation at a music festival or the graduating class.
