There are six North/South Bodies, which implement the policies decided by the NSMC on an all-Ireland basis. The main functions of these organisations are as follows:
Waterways Ireland: Responsibility for specified navigable inland waterways. Food Safety Promotion Board: The promotion of food safety awareness throughout the island. Trade and Business Development Body (InterTradeIreland): The promotion of trade and business.
Special European Union Programmes Body: This manages and oversees various EU programmes aimed at developing North/South relations. Foras na Gaeilge: This is responsible for the promotion of the Irish language and of Ulster-Scots culture.
Foyle, Carlingford and Irish Lights Commission: This is responsible for the management and development of Lough Foyle and Carlingford Lough, as well as the inland fisheries of the Foyle and Carlingford Areas. Other areas for cooperation Apart from the official bodies outlined above, political co-operation between the North and South covers several other socio-economic areas: 1. Common Agricultural Policy issues, Animal and Plant Health Policy and Research and Rural Development, e.g. co-operating over the control of Foot and Mouth disease.
2. In the case of tourism, it was agreed that a publicly-owned limited company (Tourism Ireland Ltd) would be established by Bord Fáilte Éireann and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board to promote the island of Ireland overseas as a tourist destination.
