Asian earthquake recorded in Ireland
The Asian earthquake had an effect on water levels in three wells monitored by the Geological Survey of Ireland. The three wells in County Kilkenny have been monitored since the early 1980s. Each well is equipped with a recorder. The changes in water level are transmitted via a float suspended on a wire to a pen marking a chart on a rotating drum.
All three wells recorded sudden water level changes early on December 26, 2004.
The
maximum change in water level was 280 mm. The fact that such changes can be observed at a distance of over 10,000 km reflects the magnitude of the earthquake.
The Pakistan earthquake of 2005 also had a similar impact on water levels when records were examined.
