Town street layout Town layout or settlement shape can be clearly shown by drawing a simple sketch of a photo of the area. If used with a town plan, streets on the photo can also be named. Older settlements tend to have narrow, winding streets and are quite random with little planning. Modern settlements and housing developments/estates show clear order in their planning and design. The main street of Irish country towns is usually easy to identify due to the
common use of bright multi-coloured paint on the walls. Large front windows indicate shopfronts. There may also be more traffic on this road or the road may be pedestrianised.
