CORE UNIT: REGIONAL GEOGRAPHY Migration in Mezzogiorno
Mezzogiorno, unlike other peripheral regions, is an area of in-migration because of its location close to North Africa and the former Yugoslavia. The main sources of this in-migration are Albania, Morocco, Romania, China and
the Philippines. Together, these countries account for slightly more than 38% of residence permits granted. Many immigrants have arrived from conflict zones in the independent states of
Serbia and Croatia. Thismigration has not beenwelcomed by the Italian government. Some of these immigrants travel in dangerously overcrowded boats, many of which capsize in the choppy waters of the Adriatic. They are then rescued by the Italian coastguards. These immigrants are often deported. Immigration has had an impact on the Adriatic Coast where thousands of
immigrants land each year. For this reason, temporary and permanent shelters have been created.
