100K hour or 70K hour lifetime may be the result of different operating constraints. A 100K hour lifetime will often refer to a 50% brightness lifetime whereas a 70K hour lifetime can refer to a 70% brightness lifetime. Some TFT LCD display modules now also feature integrated LED controllers enabling 0 to 100% backlight dimming (CCFL backlight dimming was gener- ally only possible to 50%).

Backlight integration The general trend in LCD backlight design is towards thinner, more com- pact and more efficient backlight units. The use of high quality light guides, diffuser sheets and brightness enhancement films (BEF) ensures that the light emitted from the backlight is homogeneous and uniform. Optical interference and non-uniformity issues can arise through poor design implementation of a backlight unit. However, simplifying a backlight unit design and structure may reduce cost but at the expense of poor brightness and display uniformity performance. Further consideration needs to be taken when interpreting technical specifications during design-in: backlight performance and lifetime issues can often arise due to lack of adherence to the correct backlight

Advertorial

PEG’s constant pursuit of bringing its customers the latest advances in display technology has resulted in the introduction of AFFS TFT technology. Advanced Fringe Field Switching (AFFS) brings a number of benefits to existing TFT displays including:

G

• Low LCD driving voltage • 20% reduction in power consumption compared to IPS technology • High contrast 600:1 • Wide viewing angle +/-85 deg • Reduced ‘pooling/ripple’ effect when the screen is touched • Excellent colour saturation

The FDT-0345 is the first product to be launched in this new series of TFT displays. Featuring a 3.45 inch screen size this display has a resolution of 320x480 (HVGA), a brightness of 350cd/m2 and an operating temperature of -20+70 degC.

integrator, has developed a long life LED backlight for its TFT displays. The first in the series is an 8.4 inch SVGA module which has a brightness of 250 nits and a lifetime of 17 years*. The FDT800600LL features a resolution of 800x600 pixels (SVGA), a contrast ratio of 250:1 with a response time of 20mS. Displaying 262K colours with a wide horizontal (120deg) and vertical (140deg) viewing angle the TFT operates over a wide temperature range of -20~+70 degC. With its high brightness long life LED backlight and easy to implement LVDS interface the FDT800600LL TFT display is ideal for embedded applications, industrial control systems, marine and medical equipment. *Based on 8 hours continuous use per day.

operating specifications.

Mechanical design The overall cohesion of the mechanical design of the module can also have a significant bearing on the display integrity in harsh environments. The combination of mechanical compo- nents, plastic mouldings and mounting fixtures need to ensure the panel is adequately constructed and able to withstand shock, impact and vibration threats. The ability to easily and securely mount the display within a housing or fitting is also important. The mechanical size and aspect ratio

of the display is likely to be deter- mined by the system design. Some industry standards prevail with 5.7”, 6.5”, 10.4” and 12.1” display modules all commonly available with a ‘tradi- tional’ 4:3 aspect ratio. Wide format 15:9 aspect ratio displays such as 7.0”, 8.0” and 9.0” are becoming more widely adopted, allowing information, data and graphics to be easily repre- sented and displayed.

Making the right choice Traditional TFT technology and the migration of wide viewing angle tech- nologies to industrial and commercial displays allows the system designer to choose a TFT display from an expanding

portfolio of TFT display solutions. The benefits provided by the features and design implementation of a premium TFT display module should not be underestimated. Additional product cost can be justified with superior optical performance and the ability of a premium display panel to provide consistent performance and reliable operation across a vari- ety of application environments. Using a display module from a premium manufacturer should also enable products to be designed and developed with the knowledge that continuity of supply and longevity of manufacture can be guaranteed for the entire product lifetime.
