The easiest way is to jump on one of the traditional wooden Keswick Launch Company boats and enjoy the 50 minute cruise around the lake. The boat stops at six landing stages so you can hop on and off to explore, or use the local buses that drive in a loop around the lake.

The walk around the lake is about eight miles and you can follow the shore pretty much all the way around. The bike ride is longer, taking you down the Borrowdale Valley until Grange where you need to hang a right over the stone bridge and back below Catbells. Either route will ultimately lead to Portinscale and back to Keswick.

Can you spot all four islands on Derwentwater? Derwent Isle (1) is the largest with a house and boat landings, then there’s St Herbert’s Island (3), Lord’s Island (2) and the tiniest one is Rampsholme (4).

One of the best ways to get your bearings for Keswick and the surrounding area is to take a tour of Derwentwater – a route you can walk, pedal, sail, drive or fly around!
