Activities for All

Canoeing on Derwentwater © Stuart Holmes

Be inspired by ideas and arrange your activities by getting hold of the Keswick Activity Guide from your accommodation provider or the Keswick Information Centre

Whether you want to learn something new, try something different or just dabble in an outdoor activity during your stay, Keswick is teeming with experts to help you.

On the water you could try sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, raft building or relax in a wooden rowing boat.

Most craft can be hired from one of the marinas on Derwentwater and there are several launching spots around the lake if you have your own. Fishermen can pick up both a permit to fish and a rod licence from the Tourist Information Centre.

Walking up the low fells or along the river banks is easy enough for anyone of any age but if you’d like to combine a bit of walking with a lot of water - have a go at ghyll scrambling.

If you have a head for heights, there’s even the chance to monkey around in the tree tops with Go Ape at Whinlatter Forest.

FAMILY BIKE RIDE

The old railway line between Keswick and Threlkeld offers a safe cycle route that the whole family can enjoy. You can hire bikes in town or take your own to the start of the route at the back of the Leisure Pool.

A long gentle slope takes you up out of Keswick to a Coast to Coast cycle ride marker. From here you just keep pedalling and enjoy the journey along the river.

There’s plenty of wildlife to spot along the way – can you spot deer, kingfishers, herons, otters or red squirrels?

Stop at the huts along the way and learn about the history of the route – read about the bobbin mill and learn about the trains that used to use the line.

It’s about three or four miles on the flat to Threlkeld where there’s a choice of two pubs for refreshment.

The easiest way back is to retrace your tracks – but the fitter families might choose to head over the hills back via Castlerigg Stone Circle. Please note this return journey involves steep hills and very narrow roads, so take care.
