VAL ROGER

RETIRES AFTER

29 SERVICE

YEARS OF

52 / NCGA.ORG / FALL 2010

The NCGA loses one if its guiding lights at the end of 2010 with the retirement of longtime director of rules and competitions Roger Val.

Val assumed leadership

of the tournament program in 1982 under then Executive Director John Zoller. He supervised one employee at the NCGA offi ce located at Spyglass Hill and served as the coordinating staff member at each NCGA event.

During Roger’s tenure, the next three decades witnessed a dramatic expan- sion in the tournament program and membership as the associate club and eClub membership options were developed and Poppy Hills and Poppy Ridge opened. Roger’s ability to adapt and excel administratively al- lowed him to succeed under seven different NCGA executive directors. The Association now administers the largest tournament program in the country with offerings encompassing scratch, net, associate club, eClub, women, junior and senior golfers. In the last six years alone, the NCGA devel- oped multiple events for female golfers and a 16-event junior tour under Val’s guidance. In particular, Roger’s sensi- tivity and passion for the net golfer ensured that the

venues and administration of their events were to the same standards as the State Amateur. With expansion in the

tournament line-up came growth in the NCGA’s volunteer program. Now numbering nearly 220, vol- unteers undergo extensive training in tournament ad- ministration and the Rules of Golf. Roger helmed the program for a number of years before passing it off to recently retired colleague Gail Rogers and later, Val’s protégé Ryan Gregg.
