A lot is made of politicians who play golf while in offi ce. Do you think that criticism is unfair? I think that when you are in offi ce you have to do what gives you the best mental state of mind. If that means playing
golf then you should do it because for people who are in high-stress posi- tions like you are in offi ce, the hardest thing to do is get away from it and clear your head and feel refreshed every day.
So whatever people need to do, if that means playing golf, they should do it. •••
When you play golf, is it a competi- tive and social outlet or are you doing business out on the golf course? No, it’s competitive and social. I don’t do it for business because its fun and I have a group of friends with whom I love to play. For me it’s the challenge of getting better at the sport. At fi rst I was a competitive fi gure skater but I’m exactly the wrong body type for that. I’m 5'8" and I’ve got 5'10" legs and somewhere along the way I decided that’s not an adult sport and I took up tennis. I did that pretty seriously and I was a good tennis player but I was not going to get better at tennis. I have a chance to get better at golf and that’s what I love about it. •••
What is it like to play golf with former President George W. Bush? Is he as fast a golfer as we hear? He’s very fast. The last couple of times I played with him he’s gotten more interested in slowing down and being more considerate of his shots, I think. But yes, he tends to play very fast. I play pretty fast too so I understand that.
